Interview | The big interview: Sony's Jim Ryan
On the competition, cross-platform play, exclusives and more.
It's hard to argue with Sony's first half of 2017. The PlayStation 4 has enjoyed a number of exciting console exclusives, including Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier Automata, Persona 5 and Nioh. But after watching Sony's E3 2017 media briefing this week, I couldn't help but feel the next six months look decidedly pedestrian in comparison.

Video | Watch: Aoife and Chris play Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Wahoo, Commander.
When an image of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle leaked last month, it's safe to say my reaction was not good. Why is Mario teaming up with gaming's equivalent of the Minions from Despicable Me? Why is this being made? Who needs this? Who even wants this?

But there's a big design problem they've yet to solve.
The Professor Layton series of games have enjoyed huge success on the Nintendo 3DS, but have so far steered clear of home consoles, largely due to the touchscreen-dependent Layton gameplay. The next game in the series, Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy, is due out on 3DS and mobile devices - but not consoles.

The big interview: Shigeru Miyamoto and Ubisoft's Yves Guillemot
Leaks, Vivendi and Mario wielding weapons.
Of all the games of E3 2017, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle stands out as the biggest surprise - even if we all knew about it beforehand. After its existence leaked towards the end of May, enthusiasm towards it was low, and then... Ubisoft's press conference began. Company president and figurehead Yves Guillemot stepped out on stage to introduce the game, and with it, a very special guest.

Feature | Eurogamer's best of E3 2017
Our five Editors' Choice awards revealed.
Wow, that was a long one. E3 2017 began for our away team on Friday last week, for those of us back in the UK on Saturday night, and has barely let up since. I've already mentioned that the volume of hype is now out of all proportion to the number of brand new game reveals, and that this is creating the impression of a flat show - but that impression isn't a wholly accurate one. The buzz from the show floor has been positive - thanks in part to the raw enthusiasm brought by the decision to admit members of the public. And, as ever, there has been a ton of games to see. And many of them have seemed excellent!

Digital Foundry | Xbox One X is $500 - so how much will next-gen consoles cost?
And is a true generational leap actually possible any time soon?
Xbox One X's pricing at £449/$499 may have disappointed many users, but it's indicative of a substantial challenge facing console platform holders: the pace of technological advancement is slowing, and existing hardware components are holding their price for longer. It's a trend that shows no sign of changing and projecting forward, we do wonder - just how much will the actual next generation of consoles cost, when will they arrive and how powerful will they be?

Digital Foundry | Forza Motorsport 7: Xbox One X's true 4K showcase delivers
Plus: the full story behind Project Scorpio's 'uncompressed pixels'.
We went to E3 looking for the software pay-off to the Xbox One X hardware reveal and emerged baffled by the lack of games - specifically, the true 4K titles promised from so much of the marketing. These titles do exist, they are coming, but for now, the only taste we have is the brilliant Forza Motorsport 7. And there's no doubt about it, Turn 10's latest series entry is beautiful on Xbox One X - but does it have the 'highest quality pixels' anybody has ever seen? Assassin's Creed Origins makes the series' past stumbles feel like ancient history
Tomb with a view.
Assassin's Creed has suffered in the past from its quickfire release schedule. Despite being one of the few annual blockbusters not about deathmatches, driving a car or kicking a ball, it was still released, every year, to fans hungry for meaningful upgrades. Sometimes, Ubisoft pulled it off despite of itself - with AC2, Brotherhood, and Black Flag, the series delivered. More often, though, Assassin's Creed has been judged as not having done enough, or simply not being good enough. Happily, it looks like Origins is going to fall into the first camp.

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Destiny 2 PC at 4K 60fps
Bungie's PC return looks exceptional - and we've got the video to prove it.

Paired with precision mouse and keyboard controls, it's safe to say that we're looking at a very different experience to the standard console versions of the game.
