Why are some Monster Hunter fans upset about a new game in the series?
It's complicated...
A short while ago, Capcom announced it'd be bringing Monster Hunter XX, the latest instalment of its long-running series that released for the 3DS this March, to Nintendo's Switch, and all was well with the world. Soon after, it announced another, all-new Monster Hunter that'd be coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC early next year called Monster Hunter World. And all of a sudden things don't seem quite so rosy. Why is that?

Digital Foundry | Is Anthem's E3 reveal the real deal on Xbox One X?
Digital Foundry's forensic breakdown of BioWare's stunning gameplay demo.
As a 'one more thing' closing zinger for the Microsoft E3 2017 media briefing, the reveal of BioWare's Anthem is hard to beat. A highly polished six-minute gameplay demo - or 'vertical slice' - the code is said to be running on Xbox One X hardware and it looks simply incredible. But from The Witcher 3 to Watch Dogs 2 and Destiny, we've been burnt before by preview teasers that exhibited noticeable downgrades when final code eventually hits stores. Armed with a pristine 4K capture of the trailer direct from Microsoft's on-site media riser, we set out to answer the question - is this the real deal?

Feature | The E3 Bulletin: Thursday
Miyamoto! Crash! Zombies!
E3 is still happening. E3 has always been happening. But today, finally, is the beginning of the end, as the brave troops overseas prepare themselves for a final trip round the show floor. Further reports suggest that the public access is putting things under strain, with a steady stream of "oh god the crowds" updates on social media that have been greeted with thousand-yard-stares by anybody who has ever been on the public floor at Gamescom.

Video | Watch: Chris and Aoife play Super Mario Odyssey
Hat's entertainment.
Between the reference-packed streets of New Donk City and the fact Mario's hat is now a sentient being called Cappy, I think Super Mario Odyssey might be the strangest Mario game to date - no mean feat, given he's spent over 30 years stomping on goombas, flying about in space and turning into a plethora of different animals.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 lets you create your own character
Sounds like No Man's Sky meets Breath of the Wild.
Ubisoft has unveiled loads of new details about Beyond Good & Evil 2 and it sounds like it's going to rival No Man's Sky as the most ambitious game of its era. Based on how close it comes to achieving its cosmic pitch, it will either be the greatest game ever or a massive disappointment. Either way, it will make Peter Molyneux's grandiose ambitions sound tame in comparison. Strap in!

Feature | E3's press conferences are killing E3
There just aren't enough games to go around.
That E3 is suffering an identity crisis is nothing new. The video game industry's yearly jamboree has faced accusations of declining relevance for a few years now. The ascent of Steam, esports, the indie scene and online PC gaming have barely been reflected at all at a show that can't escape the slowly withering grasp of retail. Meanwhile, publishers have found it easier to communicate with gamers on their own social platforms, and through influencer surrogates on YouTube and Twitch, than by participating in the hucksterish competition for the attention of the world's press at E3.

On the shoulders of giants.

Digital Foundry | Assassin's Creed Origins on Xbox One X: can third parties hit 4K?
Ubisoft lets its software do the talking.
Xbox One X has much to prove in the run-up to its November 7th launch. Forza Motorsport 7 demonstrates how beautifully 1080p first-party engines scale up to ultra HD resolutions, but what about taxing third party titles, typically rendering at 900p on base Microsoft hardware? Assassin's Creed Origins - showcased at Microsoft's E3 media briefing - presents compelling evidence that a beautiful 4K presentation isn't off the cards. We've got access to a pristine 4K source file of the gameplay segment, and even under close scrutiny, Origins holds up admirably.

Digital Foundry | Xbox One X looks stunning - but we need to see more
A lack of code at E3 means the jury's still out.
Is this just too good to be true? After a Microsoft media briefing with so many spectacular moments, we couldn't help but wonder. As the briefing progressed, new Xbox One X titles arrived thick and fast, the majority promising 4K visuals with high dynamic range rendering - a target that has proved a touch elusive for PlayStation 4 Pro. But some of the major reveals went further - they showed us a level of visual accomplishment we hadn't seen before, in addition to that stratospherically high 4K resolution. The more we watched, the more we began to wonder: can the reality of Xbox One X match what we were shown? Perhaps more pertinently, how much of what was shown was actually running on Microsoft's new hardware? How much was authentic, dare we say it, real?
