Feature | Breath of the Wild is a Zelda game for the Minecraft generation
A breath of fresh air.
Do you remember your first adventures in Minecraft? I do. I was mostly confused. For much of its history, Minecraft hasn't done much to help you understand how to play it, how to craft things, what these crafted things do, and why you'd want them. It doesn't tell you about the alternate dimensions that you can visit, or about how you get to them. It doesn't tell you why should should play or what you're aiming for.

Video | Watch: Johnny cooks meat and mushroom skewers from Breath of the Wild
Majora's morsel.
In last week's episode of our ongoing cooking show Chiodini's Kitchen, I cooked some spicy simmered fruit from Breath of the Wild. Ordinarily that would mean it was time to find a new game and a new recipe to feature for next week but somehow, when it came to Breath of the Wild, I wasn't ready to let go yet.

Review | Snipperclips review
Clip art.
In many ways, Snipperclips is the perfect proof-of-concept for Nintendo's Switch. It isn't much of a technical showcase, but it's a wonderful advert for the console's flexibility as a multiplayer and social device. It's easy to set-up (just split the Joy-Cons and go) and perfect for an impromptu gaming session: you don't need a lot of space, it's simple to explain, and the inviting aesthetic works well on both TV and portable screen.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War goes wild with the brilliant Nemesis system
Plus see 16 minutes of gameplay for Monolith Productions' sequel.
If you were hoping for a flash of colour after the exceptionally bleak Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, then be warned; the generically titled follow-up Shadow of War is grimmer, grimier and darker than what went before. This is Peter Jackson's mud and blood take on Tolkien's classics pushed into murkier water still, where eyes are gouged out and limbs torn asunder. Monolith Productions' take on Middle-Earth is not the kind of place you'd want to take a Sunday stroll, but why should it be? This is war, after all.

Digital Foundry | Dragon Quest Heroes 2: Switch vs PlayStation 4

Digital Foundry | Is Zelda on Switch worth the upgrade from Wii U?
UPDATED: Switch wins out in GPU-focused stress tests.
UPDATE 8/3/17 10:30am: As promised, we've spent a couple more days getting to grips with the performance profile of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on both Switch and Wii U, and while it's still difficult to justify investing so much money in a new console just for one title, what's clear is that aspects of the game that truly stress the GPU can see significant performance advantages for the Switch title - whether you're docked or using the console as a portable.
