  1. Zelda: Breath of the Wild uses dynamic resolution scaling

Digital Foundry | Zelda: Breath of the Wild uses dynamic resolution scaling

Does this explain why Switch's portable mode runs smoother than docked?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild uses dynamic resolution scaling in order to help maintain its target 30fps frame-rate, to varying degrees of success. It's an aspect of the game we didn't pick up on previously, but eagle-eyed users have spotted a drop in pixel-count in challenging areas, with some suggesting that this is the reason why Zelda in portable mode runs more smoothly than the docked configuration. Our results lead to different conclusions, however.

  9. Has Nintendo Switch already been hacked?

Digital Foundry | Has Nintendo Switch already been hacked?

Old browser exploit compromises new console.

Mere weeks after its release, hackers have already begun to peel back layers of Nintendo Switch's security - with a simple browser exploit now available. The exploit was revealed by iOS hacker qwertyoruiop, who claims he did nothing more than to very simply re-purpose a hack originally used to 'jailbreak' Apple iOS 9.3 devices. Later on, another hacker - LiveOverflow - confirmed that the exploit works and a proof of concept was publicly released.

  14. Watch: They Shall Not Pass brings much more than just the French Army to Battlefield 1

To say that people were annoyed about EA leaving the French out of Battlefield 1's multiplayer is really something of an understatement. The French army played a huge part in World War 1 and many people felt it was unfair to carve them out of history and serve them up as premium DLC at a later date.

  15. No Man's Sky on PS4 Pro delivers the 1080p60 dream

Digital Foundry | No Man's Sky on PS4 Pro delivers the 1080p60 dream

But the Path Finder update's 4K support needs some work.

No Man's Sky's latest 1.20 patch - the Path Finder update - is the biggest update the game has seen so far, and its new PS4 Pro feature set is getting a lot of positive attention. And rightly so: couple your console to a full HD display and Hello Games' space epic delivers a nigh-on locked 60fps at native resolution, representing an extraordinary upgrade over the base PlayStation 4 code, which in turn has received some welcome optimisation too. It's not a complete success though, and the Pro's 4K resolution mode isn't anything like as accomplished.

  20. The story of Crash magazine

Feature | The story of Crash magazine

    It's all about the games.

If, like me, you were a ZX Spectrum fan growing up in the 80s, one of its trio of passionately assembled and dedicated magazines was an indispensable read. Like the famous platform rivalry of the time, each magazine had its fervent fans: Sinclair User was the longest serving, and had a drier tone; Your Sinclair (formerly Your Spectrum) gleefully brandished its off-the-wall humour in each issue, and is especially revered today. But for me, and many others, our magazine of choice was the appropriately-titled Crash, published by Ludlow-based Newsfield.

  22. Fast RMX showcases Switch's technological leap over Wii U

Digital Foundry | Fast RMX showcases Switch's technological leap over Wii U

Massively improved resolution, faster performance, better visuals.

With a launch line-up dominated by Wii U ports, it's difficult to escape the impression that Switch is effectively a handheld version of its last-gen console, albeit built from very different core technology. Since we first went hands-on with the games, the question we've had here at Digital Foundry is pretty straightforward: just how much of a technological leap does Switch actually represent over Wii U? Once developers get to grips with the hardware, what more should we expect from it? Shin'en Multimedia's Fast RMX suggests that Switch has much, much more to offer.

Sarah Ditum would ramen have fun.

I am not a real gamer. I'm just putting that out there now, in the spirit of Fat Amy, to spare anyone the trouble of investigating whether I am in fact a real gamer. I'm not. Not that I imagine those investigations would be especially time-consuming: as I understand it, the conjunction of controller and vagina is usually considered sufficient to make the diagnosis, leading to no end of false positives in the detection of not-real gamers. But in this case, it's true. I'm as not-real as they come.

  28. People are doing impressive things in Nier: Automata

People are doing impressive things in Nier: Automata

No damage. No guns. No partner. No problem.

It's no secret that I love Nier: Automata. Yoko Taro and Platinum Games' peculiar action-RPG surprised and delighted me in ways few games have, though it's not without its faults. One of my biggest gripes with the game was its difficulty level, frequently punishing Hard mode players with one-hit kills, lest they do a lot of grinding or passively pummeling enemies with bullets from afar (yawn). The game's Very Hard mode is even more insane, resulting in an instant death from a single blow, even if it's a slap on the wrist from a low-level minion. And yet, people have found ways of besting its biggest baddies on Very Hard mode. Some even instill further challenges on themselves just to make the game harder.

But only one of them is exclusive.

The Nintendo Switch is finally out and while its launch library is slim and retail third-party support lacking, the handheld hybrid has a healthy bunch of independent games headed towards its library. At a GDC showcase I played five such titles, and they were all a lot of fun.
