Feature | All work and no play
In praise of video game rest.
Few video game protagonists keep to strict working hours, and how could they? When there's a war to win, a world to save, a lover's heart to ensnare and all the other grand and arduous problems that a game designer asks us to solve, it would be practically irresponsible to clock off a five for a pint of lager, a packet of crisps and a prestige TV box set. Even if they did have time to unwind then, just as we rarely see Tony Soprano bobbing away at the urinal, or Donald Draper questingly exploring a nostril, surely these parts of the game would be first for the editor's chop. What Lara Croft does to relax (eating caviar off her butler's extended arm while listening to Brahms, I like to imagine) is rarely relevant to the story at hand. Aside from the indulgently barmy Final Fantasy XV, what your character eats for dinner rarely has a place in the core gameplay loop.

Video | How the Yakuza helped sell Nintendo's first game
Here's a thing.
For almost a century before Donkey Kong and Super Mario, Nintendo made playing cards. These sets, which you can still buy today, are called Hanafuda cards and are intrinsically linked to Japan's history with both Europe and gambling. I've been learning to play one of the more popular game types, 'Koi Koi', in an effort to annoy my friends but found myself just as fascinated by the story behind them.

Feature | To understand 1-2 Switch, look back at Nintendo's crazy pre-history
Switched on.
Over the past few weeks, in between obsessing over whether to go with grey or neon Joy-Cons alongside my Switch pre-order, I've been idly leafing through Nintendo's pre-video game history. Thanks to the incredible efforts of collector Erik Voskuil and his blog Before Mario, it's been a delight looking back at the various offbeat creations as Nintendo moved from the playing card business that had kept it buoyant for the first 75 years of its life into the toy industry. It can be pretty informative, too.
