  6. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare review

Review | Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare review

To infinity but not quite beyond.

Let's pretend, for a moment, that the phrase 'Infinite Warfare' actually means something. Let's pretend that it isn't just the usual flavour text, tacked onto the title to mark a studio's painful rebirth, while sparing older gamers the vertigo of actually reading the words 'Call of Duty 13'. Let's pretend that it is something tangible. Even navigable. The mathematical symbol for infinity is a figure of eight turned on its side. I gaze at that symbol and after a while, I begin to see something I recognise. A single, looping path, belted at the waist to create an intersection and thus, blind spots and flanking opportunities - a terrain for engagement which ensures a combatant can strike out at whim and find their way inexorably to a foe.

    The one less travelled by.

Have you ever noticed that driving games are all a bit samey? Whether it's Formula 1 or Forza, the emphasis never changes. They're all about speed and success, a relentless, testosterone-fuelled drive toward dominance. Drive in enough circles in your gleaming, sleekly lined car, and eventually you'll be rewarded with an even sleeker, gleamier car.

  9. Johnny and Ian had a fight about Switch - in video form

Ever since its announcement, the Nintendo Switch has been a divisive console. Preorder numbers are looking fairly healthy across the board for the portable hardware, and yet scores of people are playing soothsayer and declaring the Switch will be the death of Nintendo. The argument has even reached the Eurogamer video team, as Ian Higton and I butted heads over the Switch in these two videos.

Keith Stuart on how code develops a personality.

When I played Kevin Tom's Football Manager as an impressionable child in the early 1980s, I was certain there were teams that had a genuine grudge against me. This is why I still harbour a dread of Middlesbrough that feels partially unwarranted. I saw the same sense of malevolent intent in the rival god from Populous, who seemed to predict and mock my every tactic at later levels, and in Civilization with those darn Aztecs.

According to word received by The Verge, boost mode "lets PS4 Pro run at a higher GPU and CPU clock speed in order to improve gameplay on some PS4 games that were released before the launch of PS4 Pro. Playing host to classics like Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart: Double Dash (the best Mario Kart ever, in case you were wondering), the Nintendo Gamecube was a criminally underrated console. 22. Resident Evil 7 at 4K: does resolution really matter?

Digital Foundry | Resident Evil 7 at 4K: does resolution really matter?

The PC ultra HD experience takes on PS4 Pro's 1260p image.

PlayStation 4 Pro's native 1260p rendering resolution for Resident Evil 7 turned out to be something of a surprise, representing a relatively slight 36 per cent uplift in pixel-count over the base PS4 version of the game. It's a curious choice for a console designed to service the new wave of ultra HD displays, and that led us to wonder - just how does the Pro mode compare to a full-fat 4K presentation? For a game with RE7's heavily stylised aesthetic, to what extent does a high native resolution actually matter?

  30. Nioh review

    Recommended | Nioh review

    A gaiden light.

Team Ninja's new demon-slaying samurai epic has one hell of an elevator pitch: this is Ninja Gaiden meets Dark Souls. Nioh takes the silky smooth colourful Japanese texture of Team Ninja's storied hack-and-slash affair and merges it with the light RPG structure and methodical combat of From's dark fantasy series. Yet mixing these two diametrically opposed takes on the third-person action game isn't easy and Team Ninja has done a commendable if occasionally unflattering job of cribbing From Software's most influential design tropes, all while retaining the distinctly ludicrous comic book flavour that's always been central to the Ninja Gaiden dev's DNA.
