  1. Intel Kaby Lake: Core i7 7700K review

Digital Foundry | Intel Kaby Lake: Core i7 7700K review

    Power extreme.

What is the future of the x86 processor? As discussed recently, we've reached a crossroads in CPU technology. The Core i7 7700K is a magnificent piece of technology, but improvements over its predecessor are minimal and it's safe to say that the real-life application of its enhancements are close to non-existent in gameplay scenarios. It's the best top-tier gaming CPU on the market right now, but fundamentally, the existing Core i7 6700K is only fractionally less capable.

  2. Sony Platinum Wireless Headset review

Review | Sony Platinum Wireless Headset review

A new dimension in gaming surround sound?

Sony's new Platinum Headset is the new upgrade to the excellent Wireless Headset 2.0 released three years ago, known as the 'Gold' headset in North America. The new offering is an accomplished piece of hardware based on more robust build materials, notably featuring higher quality 50mm speaker drivers, along with a unique 3D 'object-based' surround sound mode. But these enhancements come at a price - at around £130/$160, the new headset is over twice the price of the original, but the increase in quality is palpable.

Digital Foundry | DF Retro: Halo - the console shooter that changed everything

The history of Bungie's brilliant shooter, its tech re-assessed, plus the best way to play today.

Every so often a game comes along that changes everything. Games like Doom, Super Mario Brothers and Half-Life aren't just incredible games in their own right - they helped shape the gaming industry as a whole. Halo: Combat Evolved is one such title. As a game, Halo evolved and refined the first person shooter, making it work on a console like never before. As a product, it helped define the first generation Xbox and help Microsoft become the juggernaut of today and, as a project, it lifted its creator, Bungie, into the history books as one of the most revered developers of all time.

  7. The story behind the worst game ever made

Feature | The story behind the worst game ever made

    You don't know bad.

There's a part of me that inwardly grins whenever I see the latest big video game release condemned as a 'broken, unplayable mess' by the internet masses. The last notable title to garner such derision was Sega's Aliens: Colonial Marines, which I purchased a few months ago for £1.99 from a popular high street retailer. Far from a 'broken, unplayable mess', I found Colonial Marines to be an enjoyable, if flawed, effort. Not perfect by any means, but good for a modicum of xenomorphic blasting fun.

If you've bought PlayStation 4 Pro and paired it with a brand new ultra HD TV, the chances are that you'll be looking for a range of games designed to get the most out of both of your new purchases. Feature | How a Tetris clone on the front of a tape-player led to spiritual enlightenment

"I'd taken a job in a factory feeling tomatoes..."

It would be safe to say that I am not a proper gamer. So it was with absolutely no shame that in the mid-'90s my main games console was actually a crappy white plastic Walkman-alike with a black and white knock-off version of Tetris called The Wall on the front. Even though Game Boys and Super Nintendos existed, I felt no strong urge to own one. Nope, just a great big chunky ersatz Walkman with four bright coloured buttons on it for me.

  15. The killing joke: How Hitman turns murder into farce

Feature | The killing joke: How Hitman turns murder into farce

    It's all in the execution.

There's an old adage that tragedy is easy, comedy is hard. Tragedy falls into more easily definable universal truths. We all grieve more or less the same things: the death of a loved one, abandonment, the deterioration of one's mind and body. Simply show a dog growing old waiting for its master never to return and watch the waterworks flow! But comedy? That's a tricky one as humour is entirely subjective. And even when the content is clever, the delivery of a gag could see the humour fly or flounder. Pause for a half second too long or talk a little too quick and you'll botch the punchline. It's all in the execution.
