Feature | Video games remade in cardboard

Board games and video games: perfect partners?

In the 80s, popular video games such as Asteroids, Pac-Man and Centipede all found themselves recreated in cardboard at a time when board games still ruled the roost back at home. But then their popularity began to fade. What kid in their right mind would ask for Monopoly for Christmas when they could be wishing for a Nintendo 64 and four-player GoldenEye instead?

  2. Nintendo isn't replacing 3DS with Switch

Nintendo's newly revealed console, the Nintendo Switch, is both a home console and a portable console, which raises some questions about what will happen to the 3DS come March 2017 and Switch's release. Will Nintendo still need the 3DS or will Switch become, as Chesney Hawkes would say, the one and only?

  5. Face-Off: Battlefield 1

    Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Battlefield 1

    Battle royale.

Battlefield 1 combines the technical spectacle of the Frostbite engine with a return to the large-scale environmental destruction that made the Bad Company titles so popular. It's one of the most significant upgrades for the series since it arrived on current-gen consoles, and DICE backs this up with a range of technical improvements across all platforms. The core technology is immediately familiar, but visual effects are considerably ramped up with lighting, post-processing and particle effects taking centrestage.

  11. Watch: Seven things we learned playing Titanfall 2

Considering it's just been awarded an essential rating, you probably don't need me to tell you that Titanfall is very, very good. 16. Titanfall 2 review

    Essential | Titanfall 2 review

    Big mech.

Respawn is still a relatively new studio, but its legacy can be found in the modern first person shooter in all its forms - from Medal of Honor to Modern Warfare and then, finally, to Titanfall. There's a through line there that's clear to see when you embark on Titanfall 2's brief but sumptuous campaign. The heritage of a studio that effectively created the cinematic shooter, that married that with spectacle and storytelling in Modern Warfare, and now has been afforded the opportunity to build an FPS campaign around the rarest of things in this genre - ideas.

  17. Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel review

Essential | Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel review

    Winter dreams.

One of the new enemies From Software introduces in its new Ashes of Ariendel expansion for Dark Souls 3 could best be described as a ninja version of Freddy Kruger. A leaping horror of spindly limbs and metal claws, the resemblance could be coincidence, but I reckon it's not entirely accidental. Freddy invaded dreams, while From's Corvian Knights invade a painted world you're sucked into. These fake Freddys are no less fearsome than Wes Craven's creation. With their berserk souls madly scrambling towards you in a mad flurry of flips and razor-pronged pirouettes, they elicit a lot of character. From Software already built a breathtaking menagerie of monsters across its last few Souls titles (along with spiritual successor Bloodborne), but these ravenous rangers exemplify the developer's penchant for frightening foes.

  19. World of Final Fantasy review

Review | World of Final Fantasy review

    Aeris lives?

Two amnesiacs, apparently orphaned, on a journey to dethrone tyrants, reconcile kingdoms and suffer the niggling indignity of random battles. World of Final Fantasy, a game that heralds the beginning of a year of 30th Anniversary celebrations for Square Enix's flagship series, trembles with nostalgic resonance. Billed as a return to Final Fantasy's formative style (just as the company readies itself for reactions to the 15th and least conventional game in the series to date), the game revives Koichi Ishii's line-dancing, turn-based battles, as well as the careers of numerous heroes, brought out of retirement for the Disney-esque parade.

We also pick over the best means of rooftop-to-rooftop communication, and explore why you should absolutely never play VR standing on top of your house.

The Eurogamer Podcast #18 - A Tomb Raider Special

"We had the stupidest looking car park in the whole of Derby."

Oh man. Wes has gone and written an amazing article about the history of Tomb Raider. And it turns out that the history of Tomb Raider reads a bit like a classic Tomb Raider narrative. Thematically, anyway: turns out that riches don't always make you happy, and treasure often comes with a human cost.

  28. Face-Off: Batman: Return to Arkham

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Batman: Return to Arkham

A dynamic duo of Unreal Engine 4 remasters?

At the very least, the Batman: Return to Arkham remasters are an interesting technical exercise, bringing the newer features of Unreal Engine 4 to two older classics - Arkham Asylum and its sequel Arkham City. Each were originally built on a modified Unreal Engine 3, but developer Virtuos (best known for the Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD remaster) chooses to revamp its character models, overhaul its lighting, and add higher resolution effects across both. The visual changes are often striking - but sadly, glaring issues with performance can't be overlooked.
