Digital Foundry | Inside PlayStation 4 Pro: How Sony made the first 4K games console
"Power in and of itself is not a goal. The question is, what that power makes possible."
Six weeks on from the unveiling of the Sony's latest console and I'm in a conference room in Sony's new San Mateo HQ, revisiting the bulk of the PlayStation 4 Pro titles unveiled so far, accompanied by system architect Mark Cerny. It's a chance to confirm that the new hardware is indeed delivering the high quality 4K gaming experience I witnessed last month, but more to the point, this is where we find out how Sony has managed to accomplish this achievement - how it has deployed a relatively slight 4.2 teraflops of GPU power in such a way that makes PS4 Pro a viable console for an ultra HD display.

Feature | Be advised: Titanfall 2's multiplayer runs much deeper than the original
Things to mech and do.
One of the oddest themes that recurred during discussions of 2014's ebullient robots-and-rangers shooter Titanfall, was that it would have been better had it rid itself of the titular Titans. Those who honed their skills on the battlefield of COD and, well, Battlefield, yearned for a mode where Pilots (Tianfall's player characters) could wage war without the building high metallic monstrosities getting in the way; a shooter that benefitted from the free-running, double jumping fluidity Titanfall had in abundance, but did away with half of its charm.

Digital Foundry | Input lag issues fixed on PS4 Rise of the Tomb Raider
Patch 1.04 improves gameplay, optimises PS4 Pro performance.
When Rise of the Tomb Raider hit the PlayStation 4 earlier this month we were pleased to discover a number of enhancements over the previous console iterations of the game. Unfortunately, there was one bugbear that ultimately limited the game's potential - input latency. The original Xbox One release suffered from a large dead zone and noticeable input lag during gameplay and the brand new PlayStation 4 version exhibited the very same problem.

Digital Foundry | iPhone 7/ iPhone 7 Plus review
Back in black.
It apparently took "courage" to remove the 3.5mm audio jack from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, according to Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller. The company's less kind critics have voiced the opinion that it has more to do with bolstering sales of the new £160 AirPods and the wireless headphones produced by Apple subsidiary Beats Electronics, but whatever side of the fence you happen to sit on, this is a decision that has dominated the headlines and has been in very real danger of completely overshadowing this year's iPhone refresh. Apple's reasoning for ditching a socket which has been commonplace on practically every smartphone for the past decade may be flimsy at best, but where the Cupertino company leads, rivals invariably follow and we could well see an industry-wide shift towards wireless audio in the next year or so.

Recommended | Thumper review
Cthulhoop-de-loop.
Thumper works beautifully in VR, where the private cinema of the headset locks you onto the rail your silver-plated trilobite rides, tackles all manner of rhythm action violence before expiring, inevitably, in an burst of jagged shrapnel. In truth, though, this is the kind of focussed, relentless game that creates its own private cinema regardless of whether you're playing with PSVR or nothing at all. Sat in our chattering offices, the world beyond the screen didn't so much bleed away as vanish instantly. Suddenly, I was right in there, zipping along after that weird, heroic insect as we raced deeper and deeper into blood red caverns, measureless to man. To break off after a level is to feel light-headed and a bit wobbly - you're returning to the surface too quickly. To break off during a level is unthinkable. The bends!
