Digital Foundry | AMD Radeon RX 480 review
Console-beating 1080p60 PC gameplay at a superb price.
The Radeon RX 480 is a seriously impressive package. It's not the fastest graphics card on the market, but then it wasn't designed to be. AMD has targeted its Polaris technology debut at the mainstream gamer, the idea being to deliver exceptional 1080p gaming performance and VR readiness at a price that simply can't be ignored. Let's put this into perspective: Nvidia's GeForce GTX 970 is by far the most popular gaming GPU on the market today. The RX 480 is just as fast overall - if not faster - and AMD has priced it at just $199.

Digital Foundry | AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB vs 8GB review
Do you really need to spend more for the extra RAM?
We have unfinished business with the Radeon RX 480. When we initially reviewed the card, we took a look at the 8GB reference version - as supplied by AMD. However, the main selling point of the product is the $199 price-tag, which sees us move firmly into 4GB territory. UK prices for this model are highly reasonable too, starting at around £180. This makes the RX 480 stand apart significantly from the recently released Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 - a clear $50/£60 price differential.

Feature | Putting the magic back into magic in fantasy games
On the fantasy authors and ideas about sorcery game designers could learn from.
There are few things less surprising about most fantasy games than how they portray magic, which is a pretty depressing state of affairs given that magic is, by definition, the art of doing the impossible. The impossible, it turns out, has a fairly limited set of applications. By and large, it means hitting foes with elementally-flavoured balls of fire, turbo-charging your stats or zapping wounded allies back to fighting fitness, in accordance with a collection of tactical rule sets derived from the works of Tolkien via Dungeons and Dragons.

Feature | No Man's Sky's most aggravating omission (on PS4)
An obtrusive UI drops the photobomb on an otherwise breathtaking game.
No Man's Sky is a very pretty game. Its bold use of colour, surprising sentient life, and dynamic climate system offer vistas that stick in the mind for quite some time. While its procedurally-generated environments aren't quite as stunning as those shown in early trailers, it's not far off with each planet's terrain, skyline, flora and fauna offering a mesmerising sight for sore eyes. Some may be disappointed by its lack of thriving cities and lush forests, but for my money No Man's Sky still offers the most varied take on "barren alien wasteland" the gaming space has ever seen.

Feature | Watch: Johnny is really terrible at the Sega Aladdin game
Give up, Street Rat.
It's amazing to me, when I look back at some of the platformers I used to play as a young 'un, how I or any other child managed to last one level, let alone an entire playthrough, of games like Donkey Kong Country, The Lion King, or Aladdin. They were vicious and unforgiving, and yet kid me ate them up, pouring weeks and months into mastering a level that had been besting me. When you got a single game on birthdays or Christmases, you were determined to make it last. Maybe it's that learned patience (or stubbornness) that has given my generation such an appreciation for games like Dark Souls - we like to see our tenacity pay off.

It's only Chesney Hawkes' special Warcraft rendition of hit single The One and Only!
Have a bit of dignity and pride with your Friday.
Warcraft film director Duncan Jones has a bit of a thing for impossibly catchy '90s pop song The One and Only, by Chesney one-hit-wonder Hawkes. Jones snuck the song into his film Moon, via an alarm clock, and into his film Source Code via a phone's ring tone. And he almost got it into Warcraft.
