Digital Foundry | Tech Analysis: No Man's Sky
Full dissection of Hello Games' use of voxels, procedural generation and more.
Five years in the making by indie developer Hello Games, No Man's Sky is a game of incredible scale from a relatively small team. Built on an in-house engine, the final product weighs in at a meagre 5GB on your hard drive - a tiny amount compared to any typical AAA release. This is far from ordinary, and with the game relying heavily on procedural generation, very little of the game's visual make-up uses pre-made textures or assets. Instead, the star of the show is the set of algorithms at its core - lines of code capable of generating terrain, plants and even unique wildlife on-the-fly.

Digital Foundry | Telltale Batman has tech issues on consoles too
Puzzlingly low resolutions and wobbly frame-rates take the sheen of a high-profile release.
Since its inception in 2004, Telltale Games has continued to release narrative-driven adventure games focused on choice and consequence. Before you even begin playing, however, you're asked to make one of the most important choices - which version to play. With upwards of nine unique ports available for many of its games, this is no small task. Telltale Games has a troubling history of releasing games with serious bugs and performance problems, and picking the wrong platform can lead to a subpar experience. Now, with the arrival of Batman - The Telltale Series, we might finally have reached the point where the best choice is not to play at all until the developer comprehensively addresses some serious issues.

Video | Watch: How big is the grind in No Man's Sky?
Atlas shrugged.
I think it's safe to say that No Man's Sky has successfully captured my attention. This isn't overly surprising as I'm a big fan of Elite: Dangerous, a game which scratches many of the same itches as Hello Games' colourful new release. Coming to No Man's Sky as an Elite player, however, I had one question on my mind - not 'what do you do in No Man's Sky', but 'how hard have you got to grind to do it?'

Watch this!
There's a brand new Worms game out in a couple of weeks, which - if my maths serves me right - is around the four thousandth Worms game to have been released. OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but there have definitely been more Worms games than I can count on both hands.

Digital Foundry | Nvidia Titan X Pascal review
Absolute power?
With AMD's focus elsewhere in the graphics market, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080 has held an iron grip on the GPU top-end, offering a phenomenal level of performance, in exchange for a hefty price-premium. The new Titan X Pascal ups the ante still further: even more power, and an even higher price of entry. The bottom line is clear - the new Titan offers often staggering levels of performance, but we are looking at a 2x increase in price over GTX 1080 for a maximum boost of around 30-33 per cent in frame-rates.

Interview | Robin Hunicke's extraordinary journey
From Spielberg's postman to discovering Katamari, Journey's lead designer's wild voyage of discovery.
For one summer in the mid-2000s, a not insignificant portion of the game designer Robin Hunicke's day involved placing a Nintendo Wii disc into an envelope and posting it to Stephen Spielberg's boat. Spielberg was on holiday at the time, taking a break with his family from sweltering Los Angeles and production work on the film adaptation of Herge's TinTin. There was no time to break from Hunicke's game BoomBlox, however, whose deadline was approaching. Besides, Spielberg's original idea for the game - a kind of anti-Jenga involving knocking down towers of blocks - came about because he wanted a non-violent game to play with his children. He was happy to receive builds through the mail while on holiday, where his kids could pitch in with the feedback.

Feature | Watch: We play No Man's Sky all day, basically
Blasting off from 10am.
Contrary to popular belief, our jobs rarely consist of playing games all day. Mostly it's just a rushed 10 minutes or so here and there before we slink off back to our desks to write another thousand words of copy. I'm happy to report, however, that today we'll be bucking that trend with a mammoth No Man's Sky livestream that may well last the length of the working day and beyond. Will there be mammoths? You never know.
