  1. Performance Analysis: No Man's Sky

Digital Foundry | Performance Analysis: No Man's Sky

Initial PS4 impressions from Digital Foundry.

We're into our first day with the highly anticipated No Man's Sky running on PlayStation 4 and by and large, in terms of performance, the game is holding up nicely. First impressions are striking: we haven't seen a game quite like this so far in this console generation - its engine relying on voxels and procedural generation to create an open-ended, unique journey for every player. And for a performance analysis, there's simply no telling what you'll find out there that we haven't. We'll continue to update with any further impressions but, we've played enough of No Man's Sky - on patch 1.03, of course - to get a flavour of how the game's mechanics all come together.

Overwatch "taking action" against Lucio Ball exploiters

Plus: Competitive play season one pay-outs divulged.

In Overwatch, Lucio Ball is called Lucio Ball because only Lucio is allowed to play. Not D. Va, not Reinhardt, not anyone else. If anyone else shows up in your three-on-three ball game then it's a bug. And now that people have found a way to trigger the bug: it's an exploit.

  9. Overcooked review

    Recommended | Overcooked review

    Chef de party.

I've never really understood or liked Gordon Ramsay. It might be his arrogant demeanour, maybe it's the way he looks like the missing third Vreski brother from Die Hard - now I have a garlic crusher, ho ho ho. Whatever it is, I've never really got what makes him so popular. Having played Overcooked, however, I feel I've had something of a breakthrough on my (admittedly neglected) quest to understand what it is to be Gordon Ramsay; namely, it's far easier to get people to do things for you in a busy kitchen if you never stop shouting or swearing.

  17. The Bunker proves there's plenty of life in the live action genre

Some of the finest video game characters can be found a little further away from the foreground. Resident Evil's deliciously eerie Spencer Mansion; the sunken city of Rapture; the impossibly beautiful ring world of Halo: Combat Evolved. Upcoming adventure game The Bunker is another game where the backdrop is perhaps the most important character, an underground nuclear shelter that's frozen in time, furnished with hard beige fittings and soundtracked by the whirring of old hard drives that power chunky monochrome monitors.

  18. Watch: 6 new things Xbox One S can do (and one it won't)

For those who pick up an S, the main advantage will be how it is smaller than the original Xbox One, which boasts the exact same size, shape and huggability as a 1980s VHS recorder. However it does have other, less obvious qualities. Here are six new things Xbox One S can do, and one that it won't.

  19. Spec Analysis: Nvidia's next-gen Titan X

    Digital Foundry | Spec Analysis: Nvidia's next-gen Titan X

How powerful is the next GPU king? Digital Foundry breaks down the numbers.

Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080 is the undisputed GPU king, unparalleled in virtually every game application - but that situation changes just two weeks from now on August 2nd, with the release of a new, next-gen Nvidia Titan X. Based on the firm's new Pascal architecture, we're looking at Nvidia's largest 16nm processor yet, featuring 3584 CUDA cores (up against GTX 1080's 2560), 11 teraflops of power and 12GB of GDDR5X memory.

Feature | The making of Head Over Heels

Rough and tumble with foot and mouth.

There's a distinct feeling of déjà vu as I sit opposite ZX Spectrum coding legend Jon Ritman. The location may be different - we have graduated from his local curry house to a popular pub nearby - but the conversation is still firmly entrenched in the 1980s. "My memory's not what it used to be," admits Ritman, a caveat I've heard many times before while interviewing games industry veterans. "And it wasn't much good back then..."

  23. Watch: 6 gaming dishes we'd really like to try

Food's alright really, isn't it? It tastes nice, stops us from dying and helps keep TV chefs from getting into trouble - let's face it, Gordon Ramsay would just be an angry man yelling in a bus shelter if it weren't for the food industry.

  24. Sonic boom: Ellie Gibson on nostalgia, novelty, and that 9/10

Opinion | Sonic boom: Ellie Gibson on nostalgia, novelty, and that 9/10

Look, at least it's not another Pokemon Go article.

Sometimes I worry I've read so many video game press releases I've started to talk like them. A few years ago, for example, I remember saying to my husband, "I think we should leverage the success of our existing legacy brand to extend the franchise in an exciting new direction." It was only when he saw I was wearing a new nightie he realised I wanted another baby.

  29. Watch: Reigns brings out your inner tyrant

I first played Reigns in the leftfield collection at this year's EGX Rezzed and quickly fell in love. I then died approximately four seconds later, because Reigns is a cruel mistress. Devolver's rule 'em up is all about actions and their consequences, and it's surprisingly difficult to keep the four pillars of your kingdom in balance (turns out, ruling a nation is quite tricky - who knew?)

Pokémon Go developer explains why it shut down third-party apps

Because of a "negative impact on game resources".

Pokémon Go developer Niantic, Inc. has been under fire lately for its decision to shut down third-party apps that help people find Pokémon. This has turned many off of the game, especially if they live in rural areas where augmented reality creatures are few and far between. As it turns out, Niantic was doing this to free up its server resources so it could launch the game in Latin America.
