Interview | Underworld Ascendant: The game that took 20 years to sign
Paul Neurath on EA, foregoing Ultima and his new game.
Role-playing games changed forever when Ultima Underworld launched in 1992. Here was a first-person adventure set in a fully 3D simulated world - an experience like possibly no other before. Skyrim takes all the glory today but The Elder Scrolls series was still two years from appearing on shelves back then. And it's not just Bethesda's games that were inspired by Underworld: prolific and celebrated designers such as Ken Levine, Warren Spector and Richard Garriott all highly regard it - and the man in charge of Underworld, Paul Neurath, worked with most of them. Now all of a sudden he's back - and so is Underworld.

Phil Spencer plays down "Xbox One and a half" rumours
Says Microsoft would only release a "really substantial" upgrade.
Earlier this month head of Xbox Phil Spencer suggested that Microsoft would release upgraded versions of the Xbox One throughout its lifecycle. This was oft interpreted to mean Microsoft was brewing up an "Xbox One and a half", the way Nintendo did with New 3DS or Sony is allegedly doing with the unannounced PS4k. But now it looks like Spencer's statement may have been more hypothetical than literal as he's now saying he doesn't like the idea of a slightly more powerful 8th generation Xbox.

Uncharted 4 makes a move for the open, but at what cost?
Drake's progress.
Well, this is new. We're crouched in one of the rustling pockets of tall grass that's flecked across the plains of Madagascar, pushing Nathan Drake slowly towards a tower that's riddled with enemies - snipers near the top send out laser sights that probe all that parched greenery. From afar, Drake's able to mark out each enemy - get too close and a tasteful indictor above a soldier's head begins to quickly fill (in an inadvertent bit of cross-brand synergy, it looks like the floating obelisk from the cover of No Man's Sky), letting us know whether Drake's about to be spotted or not.

Review | Quantum Break review
Time out of joint.
Six years ago, Helsinki-based independent Remedy Entertainment came in for criticism that, with the long-awaited Alan Wake, it sometimes seemed more interested in making a film than it did a video game. Its follow-up feels like a typically Finnish stroke of dour, deadpan humour: with Xbox One and Windows exclusive Quantum Break, it's gone in wholeheartedly and made a full live-action movie.

Feature | Miitomo: Nintendo's attempt to clean up social media
Like?
Harassment, hoaxes, mob justice, public shaming, doxing, citizen journalism, disinformation, snuff, celebrity breakdowns, racist chat-bots, joke plagiarism and an endless stream of delectable cat gifs. The effects of the rise of social media on humanity are myriad, varied and - let's give them the benefit of the doubt - unforeseen by the creators of these ubiquitous platforms. What a time for Nintendo to launch its own variant, when the company's American office is embroiled in a publicity storm that is playing out, principally, on Twitter.
