PlayStation's Bound, and the enigma of the notgame
Bound in flame.
Sony's love of all things indie might be a relatively new outlook, but its love of all things quirky goes back a little longer. When Linger in Shadows came out on the PlayStation Store seven long years ago, it was an outright oddity; a surreal, semi-interactive doodle with its roots in the demoscene, the sort of experiment you might stumble upon in the corner of a boutique East End gallery and most definitely not the kind of thing you'd expect to find on a console with first-party backing.

Feature | Watch: Almost everything that we played during the XCOM 2 demo
With expert commentary - don't leave Muton.
I've already written a little bit about why I think XCOM 2 is shaping up so well, but one of the nice things about playing games at preview events is that sometimes (usually if the game is half decent, in my experience) they let you record a bunch of video whilst you're at it. Now even when that happens, you tend to face some kind of restriction, typically in the form of a harsh time limit - but we didn't get too much of that with XCOM 2.

Digital Foundry | The evolution of Final Fantasy 7
How the PS4 remake stacks up against prior versions of Midgar on PS1, PS3 and PSP.
Final Fantasy 7 is closing in on its twentieth anniversary and over the past two decades, Square-Enix has released countless spin-off games, tech demos and movies based on this epic release. Through it all, fans have continued to hold their collective breath for that one impossible thing - a remake of Final Fantasy 7. We were as surprised as anyone when this project was actually announced at E3 earlier this year, but with its reveal trailer consisting entirely of pre-rendered CGI, we didn't expect to see any in-engine footage for a long while.

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry vs Fast Racing Neo
Superb gameplay wrapped up in a Wii U tech showcase.
With the closure of Studio Liverpool three years ago and the lack of a new F-Zero title from Nintendo, it's been a rough few years for fans of futuristic racing games. Thankfully, 2015 is closing out in style with the release of Fast Racing Neo on Wii U. With this title, developer Shin'en demonstrates its technical prowess with some of the most impressive visuals we've seen on Nintendo's console . It's an example of old-school graphics programming at its finest, where smart optimisations and clever tricks produce results exceeding typical expectations for the platform. With so many smaller teams building games using off the shelf middleware these days, it's a rare treat indeed to experience such an impressive-looking game engineered entirely in-house.

About that System Shock 3 tease...
UPDATE: Project revealed and there's a whiff of virtual reality about it.
UPDATE 14th DECEMBER: The countdown has ended and OtherSide has revealed the name System Shock 3 with a little bit of art and an audio clip featuring the voice of, presumably, AI villain SHODAN. There aren't many clues to go by but there is mention of virtual reality in a survey you're prompted to fill out if you want to receive updates about the game. The survey asks you to rate your interest in VR gaming on a scale of one to 10. There are only six questions so its inclusion does heavily hint at System Shock 3 involving VR, which is... interesting.

Feature | What keeps modders modding?
The story of SureAI, the team rebuilding Skyrim for free.
In 2006, the Bethesda Games Studios team that brought fantasy RPG The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion to life comprised over 300 people. In 2013, in an interview prior to the launch of Watch_Dogs, Ubisoft managing director Pauline Jacquey said that a typical open world action game requires between 400 and 600 staff to make it happen. In 2012, Warren Spector claimed "over 700 people around the world" were working on his then upcoming project Epic Mickey 2. Big games require big studios, it seems.

Feature | Squad goals: Gain Ground made team-building a blast
Troops (oh my).
At first glance, Gain Ground appears to be retreading old ground. With its chunky combatants and sorta top-down view, it looks rather like teeming mega-brawler Gauntlet broken up into bite-size chunks. Instead of a sprawling, eight-way-scrolling dungeon with enemies crammed fractiously into corridors like commuters on a rush-hour train, you are presented with a single screen - often a rather sparse, scraggly green-brown field more suited to a mid-tier music festival than the glorious crucible of combat. Gain Ground has no gold to collect, no food to shoot. There are still plenty of baddies, though, and it's your task to wipe them out as a warrior of your choosing.

Digital Foundry | Fallout 4 patch 1.02: the good, the bad and the ugly
PS4 improves but key issues remain unresolved on Xbox One.
Even at a meagre 512MB, Fallout 4's new patch has a surprising impact on the console experience - restoring a good chunk of its 30fps performance in places, while other spots still don't flatter. As covered in our initial PlayStation 4 test of the Corvega factory, update 1.02 ratchets up the frame-rate for one of the game's most taxing sequences. But going beyond the factory walls on PS4, just how far-spread are its benefits, truly? And do similar tests on a fully patched Xbox One bear out similar gains?
