About that System Shock 3 tease...
UPDATE: Project revealed and there's a whiff of virtual reality about it.
UPDATE 14th DECEMBER: The countdown has ended and OtherSide has revealed the name System Shock 3 with a little bit of art and an audio clip featuring the voice of, presumably, AI villain SHODAN. There aren't many clues to go by but there is mention of virtual reality in a survey you're prompted to fill out if you want to receive updates about the game. The survey asks you to rate your interest in VR gaming on a scale of one to 10. There are only six questions so its inclusion does heavily hint at System Shock 3 involving VR, which is... interesting.

Feature | What keeps modders modding?
The story of SureAI, the team rebuilding Skyrim for free.
In 2006, the Bethesda Games Studios team that brought fantasy RPG The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion to life comprised over 300 people. In 2013, in an interview prior to the launch of Watch_Dogs, Ubisoft managing director Pauline Jacquey said that a typical open world action game requires between 400 and 600 staff to make it happen. In 2012, Warren Spector claimed "over 700 people around the world" were working on his then upcoming project Epic Mickey 2. Big games require big studios, it seems.

Feature | Squad goals: Gain Ground made team-building a blast
Troops (oh my).
At first glance, Gain Ground appears to be retreading old ground. With its chunky combatants and sorta top-down view, it looks rather like teeming mega-brawler Gauntlet broken up into bite-size chunks. Instead of a sprawling, eight-way-scrolling dungeon with enemies crammed fractiously into corridors like commuters on a rush-hour train, you are presented with a single screen - often a rather sparse, scraggly green-brown field more suited to a mid-tier music festival than the glorious crucible of combat. Gain Ground has no gold to collect, no food to shoot. There are still plenty of baddies, though, and it's your task to wipe them out as a warrior of your choosing.

Digital Foundry | Fallout 4 patch 1.02: the good, the bad and the ugly
PS4 improves but key issues remain unresolved on Xbox One.
Even at a meagre 512MB, Fallout 4's new patch has a surprising impact on the console experience - restoring a good chunk of its 30fps performance in places, while other spots still don't flatter. As covered in our initial PlayStation 4 test of the Corvega factory, update 1.02 ratchets up the frame-rate for one of the game's most taxing sequences. But going beyond the factory walls on PS4, just how far-spread are its benefits, truly? And do similar tests on a fully patched Xbox One bear out similar gains?

Article 126 in the contract, however, complicated matters.

Eurogamer readers' top 50 games of 2014 voting
Have your say on the best games of the year.
Well a very merry December to you all. It's that time of year when we all reek of booze a little more than normal, and when our indolence knows no bounds - it's a time, basically, for lists, and we're so lazy we're asking you to do this one for us. So, in time-honoured tradition, please pick your top five games of the year and tell us a little about why they were so special to you. We'll be running through the results and presenting them over the Christmas break - and you have until Wednesday December 17 at 2pm to get us your answers. If you can't see your own personal pick in the list presented, let us know in the comments and we'll add it in. Now get involved!

Essential | Nuclear Throne review
Hail to the king.
Super Crate Box and Luftrausers developer Vlambeer has always excelled at short, sweet bursts of action. When the Dutch developer revealed the release date for its mobile hit Ridiculous Fishing, it chose not to do so via a proper trailer, but rather a seven-second Vine. This flashy, bite-sized nugget of media summed up the tiny studio's works well: zippy, bombastic, and comical. Immediately attention-grabbing and over before you know it, Vlambeer's mobile and handheld titles were the perfect way to while away those wayward minutes when waiting in transit. Yet these were tailor-made for the on-the-go crowd. Would this ethos carry across into a larger game, Vlambeer's most ambitious to date: the action-roguelike Nuclear Throne?

Review | Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots review
From the archive: Going out with a bang.
Editor Oli Welsh writes: On the eve of Metal Gear Solid 5's release, we thought it would be fun to revisit my review of MGS4, one of our more controversial at the time (back when we did scores). In May 2008 I was only a few months into employment with Eurogamer and honestly had no idea that what I thought of as an affectionately sceptical review would be met with over 2000 furious comments and some pretty colourful personal feedback. Looking back on it now, the closing kiss-off was perhaps a provocation too far, but I stand by the rest of it - and I've been delighted to see Snake and Kojima prove me wrong by moving with the times, while preserving the games' unique flavour, in Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain.

Digital Foundry | What does it take to run Just Cause 3 at 1080p60?
PC hardware testing in search of the fastest, smoothest gameplay experience.
One of the most eagerly awaited titles of the holiday period, Avalanche Studios' Just Cause 3 delivers almost everything you might have been hoping for - a lush, beautiful open world packed with adventure, wonderfully insane physics and colossal, immensely enjoyable explosions. There's just one problem: performance. The consoles fall some way short of delivering a consistent 30fps, and for many, that does diminish the fun factor - especially on Xbox One. Suffice to say that if you're looking for a truly transformative experience, PC is the way to go. 1080p60 gameplay is attainable, with equivalent levels of performance also possible at 1440p and higher. Although frame-rates are obviously lower, Just Cause 3 is even perfectly playable at 4K, completely maxed and using just one GPU.
