Feature | The obscure baseball game that went on to be the PC's second highest ranked game
Unravelling the strange appeal of Out of the Park Baseball 2007.
It's the bottom of the ninth, the bases are loaded, and the Phillies need just two runs to clinch a spot in the World Series. But something's holding up play. Jim Skaalen, the pitching coach, and Jonny Estrada, the ninth batter, are arguing furiously as they approach the mound. Estrada, it seems, has lost faith in the abilities of his general manager. "I don't care if he's new to this, skip," Estrada objurgates, "he shouldn't have to Google what a 'bunt' is."

Feature | Metal Gear Solid 3: From Russia with love
“You're pretty good.”
Metal Gear Solid 2 ended with an explosion of questions. In creating a game that questioned its own status as a game, Kojima had opened countless essentially insoluble plot threads. The most pressing one was: what next? Hideo Kojima initially tried to avoid directing Metal Gear Solid 3, or so the talk goes. He did not.

Digital Foundry | Performance Analysis: Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 beta on Xbox One
Faster and more stable than PS4, but what's the catch?
The Black Ops 3 beta handed in a solid presentation on PlayStation 4, with the game delivering a similar, if more refined gameplay experience compared to last year's Advanced Warfare, demonstrating native 1080p visuals along with smooth frame-rates that adhered closely to the desired 60fps target. It was largely business as usual on Sony's console, but how well does the Xbox One beta stack up in comparison?

Digital Foundry | Can last-gen consoles handle Metal Gear Solid 5?
Digital Foundry on the highs and lows of MGS5 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Does the arrival of Metal Gear Solid 5 finally close out the cross-gen era of console gaming? While the pre-launch focus on the game has centred almost exclusively on PlayStation 4, Hideo Kojima's swan-song launches this week on four console platforms, including the stalwart PS3 and Xbox 360 - a development and publishing choice made years ago, based on genuine fears that gamers would not upgrade to the latest generation of hardware. Cross-gen production was commonplace as we transitioned across to PS4 and Xbox One, and for good reason - game-makers needed to hedge their bets financially when tens of millions of dollars were sunk into individual titles.

Feature | What returning to Gears of War says about the series' future
Que sera, Sera.
There's a scene in Generation Kill, the HBO miniseries that follows an embedded reporter as he travels with the Marine Corps' 1st Reconnaissance Battalion during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, in which Sergeant Brad 'Iceman' Colbert can be seen running around a field with his arms outstretched, pretending to be an aeroplane. Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Metal Gear Solid 5
Can Xbox One's 900p upgrade sustain 60fps? And how does it compare with PS4?
If you're still on the fence, it's fair to say Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is a worthwhile purchase on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In particular, the Xbox One version is much improved over last year's Ground Zeroes - this time offering a native 1600x900 resolution that gives the console a huge leap over the last game's disappointing 720p setup. But how well does this measure up to PS4's full 1080p - and indeed, does the resolution boost take its toll in terms of raw performance?
