Digital Foundry | It gets worse - Batman: Arkham Knight on PC lacks console visual features
Performance is poor and specific graphical effects are missing too.
It's unusual to see PC multi-platform titles failing to match up to their console equivalents - Xbox One and PS4 are based on PC technology, after all - but in Batman: Arkham Knight we have a rare example. Having tested the PC game on a Intel Core i7 3770K machine, with 16GB of memory and a GTX 780 Ti, a solid all-round experience should be within easy reach. In reality, performance levels are poor with this setup, and to throw salt into the wound, the PC's top tier settings miss out on visual effects found in the PlayStation 4 release.

Video | Video: It's not a bad time to check out XCOM Long War
It'll keep you busy until November.
XCOM 2 sounds all kinds of exciting. With taller sectoids, procedural levels and humanity having already fallen from the get-go, it absolutely has my attention. But a November release date? Man, that is like five whole months away. I don't want to wait that long. I'd like more XCOM and I'd like it right now, thanks very much.

Oculus Touch is the gold standard in VR control
Hands-on with the sensational E3 demo.
Perhaps the hottest appointment at this year's E3 was a chance to try out the prototype Oculus Touch controllers. Such was the buzz around them that it took some persistence just to get my foot in the door. I'd been booked in to try the final Rift hardware (and very much enjoyed a slice of Insomniac's action-adventure Edge of Of Nowhere on it), but getting a go on Touch necessitated a favour from an old friend and a willingness to hang around Oculus' meeting rooms for an hour late on Thursday afternoon, the show floor winding down somewhere below and the time of my flight back to London creeping ever closer, while Sony's Shuhei Yoshida and Epic's Mark Rein made friendly small talk on the sofa across for me.

Digital Foundry | Batman: Arkham Knight on PS4 is a technical tour de force
Rocksteady's superb work doesn't deserve to be overshadowed by the poor PC version.
The launch of Batman: Arkham Knight may have been blighted by the arrival of the PC train-wreck, but let's be clear - Rocksteady's console game is a slickly presented finale to the saga that should not be overlooked. Based on early impressions, the game has already proven itself in the performance stakes, and that solid frame-rate and stability is backed up by a more ambitious approach to the open world gameplay pioneered in 2011's Arkham City.

XCOM 2 serves a very different kind of strategy
Impressions and video of Firaxis' switched-up sequel.
When XCOM 2 was announced earlier this month, it wasn't quite the sequel I was expecting. I had always assumed the follow up to XCOM: Enemy Unknown would simply be more of the same, with alien forces launching a new invasion after recovering their strength in the far reaches of space. Instead, we glimpsed a future in which man and alien share an integrated society filled with guarded checkpoints, propaganda films and nods toward strange eugenics initiatives. The XCOM project has been pushed further to the fringe, continuing as a guerrilla unit trying to upheave this ordered society in any way they can. Hang on! Did we lose the war?

Video | Video: Are we sure Batman isn't killing people in Arkham Knight?
They're all just sleeping, right?
Batman, as we all know, has sworn an oath not to kill people. But what you don't know can't hurt you, apparently, as the world's greatest detective seems to not understand basic concepts like the fact that people aren't indestructible robots. We can't all afford state of the art pectoral armour like you, Bruce!

Video | Video: Mirror's Edge Catalyst has a dark secret
Keep running up that hill, keep running up that building.
I was awful at Mirror's Edge when it came out in 2008, so it was with no small amount of trepidation I approached my hands-on time with reboot Mirror's Edge Catalyst at this year's E3. To my delight, it plays really nicely and I only broke Faith's legs three times during the ten minutes I spent running around the city of glass. Not bad.
