  7. Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Batman Arkham Knight

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Batman Arkham Knight

Rocksteady's epic bucks the trend of unfinished, unpolished launch code.

It's a sad fact that this generation's big releases are often playing catch-up on their promises post-launch - a "release now, fix later" mentality that developer Rocksteady thankfully doesn't appear to subscribe to in its excellent Batman Arkham Knight. Having played the PlayStation 4 review code extensively, we're pleased to see the game is set to launch in a very refined, polished state. As the finale to the Arkham saga, it's a superb production, but crucially it also turns in a slick, stable playing experience with solid performance on day one.

  8. Face-Off: Payday 2: Crimewave Edition

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Payday 2: Crimewave Edition

Visual parity between the consoles, but severe online issues impact Xbox One.

Packing in all of the post-launch content added to the PC game over the past 12 months, Payday 2: Crimewave edition on PS4 and Xbox One has the potential to be the definitive version of the game. From a visual perspective, Overkill Software promise native 1080p resolution alongside upgraded graphics and higher frame-rates - the latter presumably in comparison to the existing 360 and PS3 ports. With that said, how does the Crimewave Edition of Payday 2 stack up against the PC game? Are we looking at any clear graphical improvements specific to these latest console ports, or simply a straight up conversion that delivers a nice upgrade over the existing console editions? More to the point, in an age where broken online games routinely hit the market, does Payday 2 present a robust, playable experience? Spoilers: Xbox One has severe problems right now.

  17. Yoshi's Woolly World review

One of the many things that Nintendo has fatally warped my understanding of is yellowcake, the milled form of uranium oxide that marks a crucial step in the business of processing uranium ore. That's back in the real world, anyway. To me, alas, yellowcake will always look and behave like the material you get in some of the levels of Yoshi's Island: the brittle, golden, biscuity kind of rock that you can bore holes through by chucking an egg or by ramming with your snout. No Geiger counters needed, but would it kill you to wear a hardhat?

Digital Foundry | Project Cars boosts visuals - and runs faster

Patch 1.04 sees impressive enhancements for PS4 and Xbox One.

A month on from Project Cars' original release, update 1.04 brings a number of enhancements to both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One that may surprise. Weighing in at 500mb, the update addresses a few of the qualms we had on PS4 specifically - such as the temporal anti-aliasing technique that caused ghosting behind moving objects that wasn't present on Xbox One. But above and beyond that, it's a solid, all-round performance boost for both consoles too, introducing new visual features previously only seen on PC.

  26. Face-Off: The Elder Scrolls Online

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: The Elder Scrolls Online

How well does the PC MMO transfer to PS4 and Xbox One?

After a rocky start on the PC last year, The Elder Scrolls Online finally comes to the PS4 and Xbox One, six months later than expected. Launching with a number of netcode-related issues that saw players unable to login to the game and stuck waiting in a server queue for up to several hours, it's fair to say the release hasn't gone as smoothly as expected. Indeed many bugs and gameplay issues are still being addressed, despite the emergence of a 15GB day one patch. In particular, the netcode code causes regular interruptions in performance across all platforms, compromising overall stability during gameplay. On the plus side, the new versions of Elder Scrolls Online deliver a new menu system built around regular gamepad control, so this is clearly not a straight port of the PC version - some thought has gone into redesigning gameplay for the console audience.

  27. Urban Chaos: Riot Response was Rocksteady's pre-Batman crime crackdown

Bruce, almighty. As widescreen summer entertainments go, Batman: Arkham Knight is big, brash and badass enough to mix it with any of 2015's movie blockbusters. It's even been marketed as the conclusion of an epic trilogy, equating London-based developers Rocksteady with popcorn auteurs like Christopher Nolan or Peter Jackson and positioning Arkham Knight as the capstone to some grand, overarching mythos. (This also conveniently sweeps 2013's snowy Arkham Origins, the competent but slightly underwhelming prequel developed separately by Warner Bros Montreal, under the bat-carpet.)
