Lego Dimensions is probably the only place you'll see Gandalf and a DeLorean together
Brick by brick.
I mean, of course. It's so obvious when you think about it, but it still manages to give me a teeny thrill when it's said out loud. "Yeah, you saw the Riddler riding on a Balrog, but the development team were like 'Oh, we've got Gollum as well, so who would win in a riddle fight between Gollum and the Riddler? Why don't we put that in the game?'" Well why not indeed, though I'm still undecided over the outcome of that particular showdown.

Total War and Warhammer make the perfect couple
So here's hoping the final game is as good as our recent hands-off demo.
This was always supposed to be the perfect mix, wasn't it? The sheer unmatched scale of Total War meeting the extraordinary races of Warhammer Fantasy; I think I've been daydreaming about this game for more than a decade now. And the demo looked incredible: a Greenskin horde crashing violently into the organised lines of the Empire at Black Fire Pass. Being able to sit back and watch it all play out is captivating. However, that's a pretty important clarification to make. We watched the battle, but we didn't play it.

Scoop! There's a new historical game on the way too.
As you may have seen in our preview last week, I think Total War: Warhammer has an enormous amount of potential. Metal Gear Solid 5: A phantom battle waged by the vanished
A brave new world.
Hideo Kojima's name may not be on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain's marketing, but it's all over the game. Every mission opens with a credits sequence overlaying its intro with Kojima's name popping up at least once once each time. Perhaps it's a jab at Konami, though maybe it's the sort of ego-stroking flourish his employers grew weary of. Regardless of your take on the corporate domestic dispute, the message is clear: with The Phantom Pain we're clearly back in Kojima town.

Digital Foundry | The challenge of remastering Uncharted
Why porting the Naughty Dog engine isn't simple - and what to expect from The Nathan Drake Collection.
On the face of it, the notion of bringing the entire Uncharted trilogy from PS3 to PS4 - with 1080p60 upgrades to boot - should be relatively simple. After all, PlayStation 4 represents a generational leap in system capabilities, particularly in terms of raw GPU power. However, Naughty Dog's recent GDC talk - "Parallelising the Naughty Dog engine using fibres" - reveals in stark detail how difficult it was to bring The Last of Us across to the new Sony console. Indeed, the initial porting work for the game resulted in a sub-optimal experience operating at less than 10fps.

Feature | Game Freak trades Pokémon for Tembo the Badass Elephant
Gotta smash 'em all.
Finally, a game with the guts to ask: what if Rambo had been an elephant? If Rambo had been an elephant, it transpires, things would have been just fine. Faced with an invading army from another world - or so I imagine; I was tying a shoelace during the opening cut-scene - Earth turns to its greatest hero. And that's Tembo, several tons of trunk and ears and leathery hide set upon the strange stubby feet that elephants have. Called back to action and decked out in warpaint and one of those scarves you tie around your head when you want to look like a badass, Tembo starts smashing stuff up. Cities quake. Enemies pinwheel through the air. Cars are compacted and a lot of glass is shattered.

Introducing Eco: An ecosystem sim where everyone must nurture a shared planet
Or face server-wide permadeath.
Eco is one of the most ambitious and original concept I've seen in a while. It tasks players with manipulating an ecosystem with one catch: all players on the server are working in the same environment. If the community fails to nurture the nature, it's permadeath for everyone and a new planet is spawned.
