Digital Foundry | Should you install The Witcher 3's day one patch?

UPDATED: Initial impressions of update 1.01 on PS4 added ahead of full performance analysis.

UPDATE 19/5/15 14:03: We've now had the opportunity to test the 1.01 patch on PlayStation 4, and can report that the FMV stuttering issue introduced in the Xbox One day one patch is much less of an issue on the Sony platform - video playback is much more consistent. Engine visual settings appear to be a match between the two consoles but curiously, the PS4 version does appear to run with a capped 30fps, giving a more consistent update than its Xbox One counterpart. We can also confirm native 1080p resolution throughout. We'll have head-to-head performance tests online as soon as possible.

Feature | Debugging the hero narrative in The Magic Circle

    'Pure, unadulterated skullduggery.'

The Magic Circle, now available in Steam Early Access, delights in two things: messing with the typical hero narrative and playing inside baseball. Starting a new game feels a lot like dropping round a friend's house an hour before you said you would: the place is a mess, they're not especially happy to see you, but they're trying their hardest to be courteous all the same.

  18. Video: The best b-movie games in history

B-movies are pretty great. I mean sure, most of the scripts are terrible and the acting is enough to make Tim Curry's performance in Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 look oscar-worthy, but that's just part of what makes them so charming.

  22. From Torchlight to the stars: a morning with Rebel Galaxy

Jim Raynor would be proud. Not only does Rebel Galaxy's starting ship cut a distinctly Hyperion-styled silhouette against huge starboxes whose bloomy nebulae serve as a reminder that gaming's love affair with Hubble is far from over, but StarCraft's heroic good-ol'-boy would presumably approve of the audio, too, which eschews synth and strings for what sounds like a couple of meatheads whacking away at Fenders in the kind of bar that has chicken wire across the stage. That's a pretty long sentence, and you have my apologies, but Rebel Galaxy earns that approach. It is a simple game at heart, but a breathless one as well, a scamper across empty space from one mission to the next, shootin', lootin', tradin' and enjoying the butt-rock. It is Elite, if Elite weren't the product of Cambridge grads who spend their spare time pondering neutrinos, but rather the people who make Budweiser commercials.

  24. Face-Off: Oddworld New 'n' Tasty

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Oddworld New 'n' Tasty

The Unity engine-powered remake compared on PS3, PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Not so much a remaster, but more of a full-on remake, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is a completely new take on the fondly remembered PS1 puzzle-based platformer, Abe's Oddysee. Built up from scratch with brand new artwork and a modern 3D graphics engine, developer Just Add Water faithfully replicates the gameplay of the original release, while adding new features to better utilise the more modern hardware. Scrolling environments add new twists to old puzzles, while the use of 3D visuals allows for sweeping camera angles and additional details that further flesh out the world over what was possible on the first-gen PlayStation hardware.

  25. Face-Off: Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster on PS4

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster on PS4

One game compared across three Sony consoles (and a handheld).

Hot off the heels of last year's excellent PlayStation 3 and Vita remaster package, Final Fantasy X and X-2 land on PlayStation 4 with a string of upgrades - a remaster of a remaster, if you will. It's not been long since our last travail through Spira: precisely 13 months dividing this latest release from the last two. In that time, Square Enix has continued the same remastering process by updating even more assets and effects. But having appeared on three Sony home consoles in a row, plus a handheld, does the new PS4 version bring the definitive editions of these classic titles?
