Feature | What happens when Ikaruga's director remixes one of Sega's all-time greats?
After Burner 2, climaxed.
Yu Suzuki made great games during Sega's 80s heyday, though you could argue that the cabinets were even better. From the otherworldly beauty of a Space Harrier to the chunky desirability of an Out Run, they're deliciously physical manifestations of these classics: these are games you can touch.

Feature | Axelay saw Konami at its 90s peak
Axelay rose.
Sega's boot-up logos of the 16-bit era might be the most fondly remembered, but for me it's Konami's that will always be the best. That scan line bringing the black screen to life, climaxing with a twinkling chime reminiscent of an arcade cabinet fed with a new 20 pence piece; it promised so much, and more often than not it would deliver. The early 90s were a golden era for Konami. Viewed through the filter of my own personal tastes, I'd go as far to say it saw the developer at its very best.

Feature | Yasuhisa Kawamura and the Resident Evil that never was
Meet the man who tried to make Capcom's survival horror even scarier, and failed.
Very much like the shambling, slack-jawed corpses that stalk its instalments, Capcom's Resident Evil series is a curiously aimless beast at present. 2012's Resident Evil 6 deviated too far from the core values of the franchise by trying to appeal to horror and action fans alike, and Capcom has since fallen back on former glories by remastering the GameCube remake of the 1996 debut title for modern consoles. Meanwhile, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 skulks almost apologetically in the shadows, hoping to offer a spin-off romp which will maintain the interest of an increasingly restless fan base until the next numbered entry in the lineage hoves into view.

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry vs Saints Row 4: Re-Elected on PS4
Take Gat and party.
Released towards the end of the last-gen lifecycle, Saints Row 4 demonstrated how dated console hardware struggled to keep up with the technological demands of the latest triple-A titles. Despite numerous improvements over its predecessor, the game suffered from poor frame-rates and compromised image quality, impacting on the overall enjoyment of the game. While the wacky sci-fi settings, satirical humour, and crazy range of weaponry still allowed for enjoyable moments on both Xbox 360 and PS3, it was clear that the PC game was by far and away the best way to enjoy the experience.

Digital Foundry | Spec Analysis: Alienware Alpha
The tiny gaming PC that trades blows with PlayStation 4.
Originally planned as a Steam Machine running the Linux-based SteamOS, the Alienware Alpha is due for release very soon now, running Windows 8.1 and bundled with an Xbox 360 wireless controller in lieu of the delayed Steam controller. We took a look at the console-like PC at a recent meeting with Alienware and reckon it's got potential: the form factor is tiny, first impressions of the acoustics are good and the only unknowns concern the quality of its bespoke console-like interface (we weren't shown this, but some early shots are out there), and of course the raw performance of the internal components.

Feature | Rich Stanton on: Cheesing Destiny
"It feels like Destiny has driven certain of its players mad."
Recently I've been thinking about cheese, and not the cow stuff. Cheese as in taking advantage of a game's weird AI behaviour or a level glitch to bypass the 'correct' way of doing things. Surely we're all guilty of cheesing it up, whether for laughs or more mercenary reasons, but one game has finally managed to... well, make a game out of it.

This is how Bully would look in HD
Student recreates the set of Rockstar's classic.
Rockstar's mischievous scholastic satire Bully (or Canis Canem Edit, as it was originally called upon its European release) came out in 2006 and many have clamoured for a remake to it. It's unclear if that will ever happen, but graphic design student Wesley Arthur has given us some idea of how that might look by painstakingly recreating its boy's dormitory in Unreal Engine 4.
