Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is Dear Esther meets The Prisoner

The Chinese Room elegantly embraces 60s British sci-fi.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture might not make a lot of sense, at least at first. Its small cast of five characters are relegated to bobbing orbs of ectoplasm that occasionally manifest themselves as ghostly apparitions of things past. Pay phones ring, only to shout cryptic messages to you, and nothing stays the same for very long. Unraveling Rapture's core mystery, however, is only one diversion. The real reason for existing within Rapture is simply to experience this beautifully melancholy piece of surreal interactive prose.

See the 2D sandbox indie in action from 5pm BST.

2D, side-scrolling sandbox games aren't particularly uncommmon these days - hello Starbound, and hello Terraria! - but how many of them can boast pirates? First exit from New Eden.

Thorolfur Beck has enjoyed - or perhaps we should say endured - an intriguing career trajectory. He's been a global ambassador for kids TV phenomenon LazyTown, laboured on a Reykjavik building site, produced Iceland's 2006 Eurovision Song Contest entry and spent six months working in a psychiatric hospital. We should add that all these disparate entries on his CV come after his five-year stint as Eve Online's very first lead designer.

  14. Tales from the Borderlands is Telltale's triumphant return to its comedic roots

Having not played much Borderlands and only having cursory knowledge of the series, I approached Tales From the Borderlands at this E3 with a bit of apprehension. Sure, it would offer fan service to veterans of Gearbox's open-world shooting series, but two games and a smattering of DLC hardly seems like the sort of inviting, expansive universe of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead or Bill Willingham's Fables series.

  18. Why Unreal deserves to be remembered alongside Half-Life

The anticipation is the best part. Clutching a game box, and trying not to get carsick as you flicked through the manual on the car ride home. For someone used to the cardboard characters of the Saturn, N64 and Playstation, Unreal wasn't just a graphical upgrade: it was a revelation, a game that looked impossibly beautiful even without a graphics card. Even today, with a judiciously installed HD texture pack, it's still a sight to behold.

  21. Face-Off: EA Sports UFC

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: EA Sports UFC

    Fight Night: The Next Generation?

Our initial analysis of the UFC demo proved mostly positive on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, albeit with the Sony system pulling out a small graphical advantage in terms of effects and image quality. However, the overall experience on both platforms didn't feel quite as polished as it could have been: transitions between menus stuttered on-screen, while a few mild performance issues prevented the PS4 game delivering the best possible experience in all areas. With the final game in our grasp, it's time to see if these elements have improved.

PC gaming is reaching out and expanding beyond its traditional desktop domain, and while Valve's lounge-friendly Steam Machines have been delayed until next year, there are still plenty of options available right now for replacing or supplementing your console with a high-end, small form factor gaming PC.
