Who would have thought the best third-person shooter to emerge at last week's E3 would come from Nintendo? The reveal of Splatoon, a colourful squad-based shooter, was typical of a company that managed to hit all the right beats in Los Angeles, delivering something far more significant than a new Mario, or a new Metroid - it was an all-new IP, produced by the next generation of talent within Nintendo that's all-important to its future.

Review | MotoGP 14 review
Lean on me.
Seven wins straight. It's almost unthinkable that anyone could pull off the perfect MotoGP season by winning every single race, but in the here and now, with 11 races to go, that's exactly what Marc Márquez could achieve. He's this year's defending champion, and despite strong competition from Rossi, Pedrosa and Lorenzo - the latter of whom won more races last season that any other rider - it looks like the new ace up Repsol Honda's sleeve is going to walk it. This leaves the fight for second place as the more interesting proposition, especially with so many contracts about to expire.

Opinion | Directly to you: Nintendo wins E3 on its own terms
New games, fresh thinking and brilliant PR bring the Kyoto giant bang up to date.
Reporting from last year's E3, I chided Nintendo for its deeply conservative line-up that traded on past glories. I felt that, despite their obvious quality, games like Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 showed a publisher and developer that was at risk of growing inward-looking and creatively stale. Seven months later, after a dismal round of financial results for the firm, I took up the theme again. Had the mighty Shigeru Miyamoto lost his touch? Where was the young talent that would replace him, and where were the killer new gameplay ideas the company was known for?

Review | Pullblox World review
Slide away.
"World" has pretty specific connotations in Nintendospeak. Ever since being used to mark the moment that Super Mario Bros. graduated from the NES to the SNES and became the all-encompassing platforming genius we know today, it's become a signifier not only of a series moving to new hardware, but of that series cementing its evolution and preparing for the future. "This sequel," it says, "is a new beginning."

How Far Cry 4 is like a Paul Verhoeven film
"We're going for that awkward intersection of serious people doing outlandish things."
Has there ever been a series as tonally diverse as Far Cry? Sure, the likes of Final Fantasy, Assassin's Creed, and BioShock have drastically changed their settings, genres, and flavours to various degrees, but the feelings they invoke remained largely the same. Far Cry, however, went from a light, goofy shooting adventure about aliens on a tropical island to a sombre dissection of the African blood diamond trade, to a satirical take on the modern open-world shooter, to an extraordinarily goofy parody of "edgy" 80s sci-fi culture. Now, with Far Cry 4, Ubisoft has settled on a tonally ambiguous Himalayan adventure that rests in the nebulous place between drama and comedy, light and dark, satire and sincerity. It's not a place often explored by the medium and that makes it as difficult to decipher as its wildly enigmatic cover.

Fables Legends is the Lionhead game you always wanted, but never asked for
Imagine if Left 4 Dead's AI director wasn't AI.
Saving the world is easy. Conquering it, however, is hard. The former I've done in thousands of games, but the latter? That's the tricky part. At least that's how it is in Fable Legends, Lionhead's asymmetrical third-person brawler/RTS hybrid that cleverly mixes team-based co-op with tactical top-down defence.
