  2. Video: Dealing with other humans and synthetics in Alien Isolation

Creative Assembly's Alien Isolation may be a bit of a departure for the Total War developer, but it's already looking like a much more assured step in a new direction than anything else the developer has tried outside its famous strategy series.

Feature | Tank football: celebrating the World Cup with the other beautiful game

World of Tanks has come down with football fever.

I have a very mild fever. A very mild World Cup fever. I've been told it's about to start, I've seen that John Oliver clip so I now know what FIFA's up to these days, and I've just scored my very first goal. My very first goal ever. And I was driving a tank when I scored it.

Weapons are never the solution in Alien Isolation

    "It's absolutely not a shooter..."

In Alien Isolation, the first-person survival horror game from Creative Assembly, you end up carrying a revolver - at one point you can even pick up a flamethrower - and as you're exploring the giant, decommissioned trading space station Sevastopol, slowly, as silently as possible, you bump into other humans. That's what happens to me when I play the game's newest playable level, lifted from a section set further into the game than those previously shown. As I skulk around the ruined corridors of the spaceship, all of a sudden I find myself face to face with a man.

  11. The Hardline beta: it's Battlefield, but it works

The most amazing thing about the Battlefield Hardline beta on PC? It works. No black screens. No hard crashes. No rubber-banding. What relief after months of tussling with DICE's rarely functioning Battlefield 4. Those struggles had started to feel like features. Yet Visceral's debut in the Battlefield universe (as it will likely be called from now on) runs like clockwork, even at this stage.

  16. Watch Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us at 60fps

Digital Foundry | Watch Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us at 60fps

Experience Naughty Dog's new PS4 trailers the way they were intended.

UPDATE 11/06/14 19:07: This report from GamingBolt.com suggests that the Uncharted 4 trailer is indeed running in real-time - a simply phenomenal achievement. We've studied the video in a little more depth and have concluded that it's definitely running at native 1080p resolution (as opposed to being rendered at a very high resolution, then scaled down - a process known as super-sampling). Small clipping anomalies, a touch of specular aliasing on Nate's shirt as he sits up, along with some shadow aliasing on his forehead also suggest a real-time render. On the face of it, we're still looking at some pretty incredible anti-aliasing here for a real-time technique on a game running at 60fps, particularly when it comes to the perfect, artefact-free rendering of Nate's hair - but the combination of the low contrast setting, slow camera movement, motion blur and depth of field would work well generally in making aliasing much less of an issue.

  26. Watch the latest Metal Gear Solid 5 trailer at 60fps

Hideo Kojima's exacting standards for Metal Gear Solid 5 are plain to see. Few developers target 60fps, and fewer still actually achieve a completely locked, flawlessly smooth experience. Kojima Productions achieved just that with Ground Zeroes, and the brand new E3 2014 trailer gives us the chance to see whether the technology can achieve the same trick with a more demanding range of characters, actions and locales.

  29. Sony had more wow moments, but Microsoft has closed the competence gap

Opinion | Sony had more wow moments, but Microsoft has closed the competence gap

A lack of 2014 titles on both sides of the console war favours Xbox.

First things first, congratulations to Microsoft. I have been on their case ever since that awful mess in Redmond last May, but Monday's E3 press conference was a vast improvement. The message may have taken a long time to go in, but the focus on games that everyone has been asking for was inarguable - so much so that even a cool new Snap mode app giving you more control over Achievements was relegated to the pre-show, presumably not to dampen the focus and risk incurring further wrath.

  30. Forget E3 press conferences, sometimes Cliffhorse is all you need

Opinion | Forget E3 press conferences, sometimes Cliffhorse is all you need

Just watch those Dogecoins rolling in.

Cliffhorse is fun for five minutes or so but - for a certain strain of its audience - it must be troubling for a whole lot longer. To elaborate: on Saturday, Markus 'Notch' Persson released a game that had taken him about two hours to knock up using the Unity engine. Then yesterday, Sony and Microsoft - and Ubisoft and EA - spent millions of dollars renting auditoria, giant screens, and often weird light-up wristbands to get the news of their new games to the world. They flew developers around the planet to appear on stage in LA and splashed out, in some cases, on Hollywood talent to really drive the point home. Notch? Two hours. Unity. A game about a horse pushing a marble about. And yet when Sony and Microsoft reached the technology page of the BBC News website, Notch and Cliffhorse were there too.
