Feature | Rovers Return: reinventing the ARG with Extrasolar
Explore an entire alien ecosystem from your browser window.
I have a confession to make. I've found a free-to-play game with a cooldown system that I love. Usually, these artificial barriers to progress make me climb the walls in despair. In Extrasolar, a narrative browser game from Lazy 8 Studios, I actively look forward to being made to wait for the next bit of gameplay.

Opinion | Down the replay rabbit hole
Why Ken Levine's plan for endlessly replayable narrative could be a risk not worth taking.
Ken Levine wants to chase a dragon, and whatever the (inevitably more complicated) truth behind the shuttering of Irrational in order to do it turns out to be, let's take that recently restated goal at face value. "To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable." Huge challenge. Noble sounding goal. Bad idea, looking as seductive on paper as a treasure map promising great riches and fortune, but ultimately leading right down the same kind of rabbit hole that Balance of Power creator Chris Crawford has now been spelunking for over 30 years.

Feature | The PR man who spams games journalists about classical music
From the archive on the eve of this year's Classic FM Hall of Fame vote.
Every so often, we reach back into the Eurogamer archive for a feature you may have missed or might enjoy again. On this occasion, however, I was prompted to resurrect this one by its subject, who emailed me last week to ask about it - something that will make sense when you read the feature. It was originally published in February 2013.

Feature | Unreal Tournament retrospective
Flak canon.
I've killed my little brother Matt hundreds of times. I've killed him on a gunboat. I've killed him on a train. I've killed him on a spaceship, but not, sadly, on a plane. It's been reciprocated in kind, too. He's sniped my head off on an asteroid, dropped a nuke into my castle, and splattered my giblets across a cathedral floor. Ah, memories.

Digital Foundry | Next-Gen Face-Off: Strider
Xbox won?
After more than a decade, Capcom has finally seen fit to revive the Strider franchise, placing the crew at Double Helix in charge of its revival. Initial reactions to the new comeback were mixed, with the developer's less than stellar track record causing some concern amongst fans at the time. They needn't have worried - the game's a real success, standing as a strong entry in the genre and possibly the best game Double Helix has made to date.

Opinion | Twitch is the gaming revolution that can't be owned
How gaming video is a game in itself.
The graveyard in Pokemon Red's Lavender City has always been an odd place, capable of spinning out myths and legends of its own, but seeing 80,000 people trying to shepherd a single character through its maze of tombstones has turned it into something else entirely. It's become an apt stage, complete with props of madness and despair, for the bumbling, insane genius that is Twitch Plays Pokemon.

Review | Rambo: The Video Game review
A war you won't believe.
Shallow, dumb and relentlessly violent, you could make a pretty strong case for Rambo: The Video Game being a near perfect adaptation of its source material. That source material being the three Sylvester Stallone movies released between 1982 and 1988, in which sociopathic war veteran John Rambo shoots the crap out of a small Washington town, most of Vietnam and a good chunk of Afghanistan.

Feature | How hackers reinvented Street Fighter 2
Back in the 90s, a group of bootleggers released their own version of the world's most popular fighting game - and influenced its evolution in the process.
'Round one. Fight!' booms the announcer, just like he has a million times before. Guile opens with a Sonic Boom, Ryu counters with a fireball. So far, so familiar. Then the first strange thing happens: Guile throws another Sonic Boom, much faster than his two-second charge time should allow. Ryu's forced to block one, then another. He jumps backwards to get space, and the second oddity occurs - he unleashes a fireball mid-leap, 'standing' on thin air. As soon as it leaves his hands, it veers towards Guile, who's already into the animation for his next shot. Meanwhile, two Sonic Booms are already humming through the air, glacially slow but ominously relentless. Ryu retaliates again, then again. Soon, the screen is a stream of projectiles, Guile's signature yell overlapping itself: 'Sonic-sonic-sonic-sonic...'

Yet here we are, with Nvidia's eagerly awaited new "Maxwell" technology receiving its debut in the form of a mainstream gaming product - the £115 GeForce GTX 750 Ti.
