Interview | How roll7 made a game that was nearly impossible to beat
OlliOlli's developers on its console debut, and what's next for the London studio.
Dubbing the PlayStation Vita's OlliOlli one of the games of the year might not be saying much when we're only a couple of months in, but I'm fairly certain it'll retain that accolade for me when 2014 is out. A deliciously tactile 2D skater that winds score attack around a set of polished trick mechanics and neat level design, it's the kind of game that can consume entire lazy winter weekends.

Digital Foundry | Next-Gen Face-Off: Rayman Legends
Xbox One, PlayStation 4 - or Wii U?
Featuring beautifully drawn 2D visuals and imaginative gameplay, Rayman Legends stands out as one of the best games released last year, showing that the humble 2D platformer still has much to offer amongst a sea of blockbuster first-person shooters and open world action titles. It's also one of the few games to deliver native 1080p visuals running at a smooth 60fps - an impressive feat rarely seen on the previous generation of consoles, and something which both the PS4 and Xbox One are struggling to achieve in an era where pushing prettier pixels on screen is still considered to be more important than targeting high frame-rates.

How The Order reinvents QTEs and the cinematic game
The PS4 exclusive combines the methods of Quantic Dream and Naughty Dog in a triple-A spectacular.
A good few minutes of our first proper look at The Order, the PlayStation 4's high-profile, big-budget exclusive, pass before we see anything resembling traditional gameplay. Even then it's brief - a short, staged shoot-out in a crowded Whitechapel alleyway where third-person cover-based gunplay gives way to a fist fight before our hero Galahad crashes through a weak timber roof. Except it's one of those fist-fights, as Galahad's actions are brought to life via on-screen prompts that, when pressed in the correct order, see him reaching for a knife before plunging it into a rebel's neck.

Review | Earth Defense Force 2025 review
Exterminate.
It started with my Ranger holding an assault rifle and running towards the red dots on the radar. The graphics were a soupçon of PlayStation 2 mixed with a smidgen of grey texture updates. The loading times had been ludicrous. The terrible voiceover was touting the arrival of some GIANT INSECTS. GIANT INSECTS were swarming the city, GIANT INSECTS that haven't been seen in over SEVEN YEARS. GIANT INSECTS were last seen here SEVEN YEARS ago. SEVEN YEARS?! GIANT INSECTS.
