Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Sam Fisher's Wii U debut stacked up against the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 versions of the game.
Developed by the newly formed Ubisoft Toronto studio, Splinter Cell: Blacklist re-introduces its covert hero Sam Fisher with a new motion-captured voice actor, throwing us into a action-thriller blender that has us terrorist-spotting our way across the globe. Level design is still heavily encouraging of the stealthy approach, where the dividing line between light and shadow not only forms the bedrock to its gameplay, but also informs the game's technical direction behind the scenes. The team's LEAD engine carries straight over from the last game with clear enhancements, ignoring next-gen formats to focus on the PS3, 360, PC and Wii U, where Nintendo's platform receives full GamePad support, while also being beset by a myriad of bizarre design choices.

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Saints Row 4
Virtual insanity.
With Saints Row: The Third, there was a sense that Volition's franchise was leaving its GTA-inspired roots behind in order to carve its own path in the world of free-roaming sandbox games, using its irreverent tone, cartoon violence and outrageous action to set it apart from the crowd. Saints Row 4 continues this trend, taking the refreshingly preposterous gameplay found in its predecessor and pushing it to even higher levels of insanity, with alien invasions, superpowers and over-the-top self-parody once again high in the mix.

Review | Killer is Dead review
And so is punk.
To what extent is Goichi Suda still making the games that bear the Suda 51 hallmark? It's hard to tell. The affable punk stylist of the Tokyo games scene hasn't taken a director credit since 2008. Usually referred to as creative or executive director, sometimes taking a scenario or scriptwriting credit - and always happy to speak to the press as the cool figurehead of his studio, Grasshopper Manufacture - Suda's style is unmistakable, but his personal creative input is increasingly opaque.

Review | Lost Planet 3 review
Spork unlimited.
Lost Planet 3 is a tremendously boring game masquerading as a slightly interesting one. A backwards-looking game in many ways, Spark Unlimited's prequel returns to both the icy wastes and single-player focus of the first game in Capcom's weirdly resilient series, which has made it to a second follow-up despite never troubling the sales charts or particularly wowing reviewers.

Video | Eurogamer vs. Spelunky Daily Challenge
LAST DAY: A special video tribute and death compilation.
LAST DAY: It's all over! Well, for me Spelunky will never be over, but today is the first day in three weeks where I haven't woken up super early, dragged cables all over my lounge and recorded myself jabbering away over the top of a Daily Challenge. I hope you've enjoyed the videos - I've had great fun doing them and it's a pleasure to load up Steam now and see that every notification is someone playing my favourite game!

Digital Foundry | Future-proofing your PC for next-gen gaming
Component upgrade and new build advice from Digital Foundry.
The arrival of next-gen consoles could well prove to be a double-edged sword for PC owners used to enjoying the best gameplay experience. On the one hand, it's extremely good news: developers no longer need to create engines for multiple hardware types with little common ground - console and PC development will all be based on x86 computer architecture. By extension, the need to use brute-force processing power to overcome unoptimised PC ports will hopefully become less of an issue, leaving gamers to enjoy the more positive aspects of the platform - upgrading, customising, shaping the experience towards their own requirements.

Review | SteamWorld Dig review
Gouge away.
Few would have been aware of SteamWorld Dig's existence before the last Nintendo Direct saw Satoru Shibata rather casually announce that it was to launch on the eShop immediately after the end of the presentation. I'll admit, I dismissed it on sight: though it looked nice enough, it reminded me too much of the disappointing Dillon's Rolling Western, if only for the Morricone-esque whistling on the soundtrack.

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry vs. Respawn: the Titanfall interview
Xbox One, the cloud, the Source Engine - and the 1080p60 question.
Game of the show? Perhaps even the first major next-gen system seller? Gamescom offered the first chance to go hands-on with Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall - the brand new sci-fi first-person shooter from some of the key creative minds behind Call of Duty, the franchise that defined the current console generation. Having left Infinity Ward and regrouped with new additions to the core team, Respawn is now ready to let us play its new game, and first impressions are quite overwhelming.

Behold: Gone Home's several easter egg cameos by other devs
Double Fine, Supergiant, and Harvey Smith contributed to the Greenbriar estate.
Last week saw the release of The Fullbright Company's fascinating exploratory mystery, Gone Home, in which players spend the better part of a few hours learning about a suburban Oregonian family in 1995 by rifling through their possessions. Some of you may have been quite taken by the story, while others weren't as intrigued by it, but almost everyone can agree that the four-person team at Fullbright can simulate 1995 with the best of them. But like most great artists, they can't do it alone and had help from other industry veterans to complete their vision.

Feature | Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 retrospective
Musou soup.
It's often assumed that all of Tecmo Koei's Musou titles are largely the same game. You're some powerful warrior, you run around chopping at large groups of cannon fodder, then beat up some tougher opponents with names over their head. When you've duffed up enough of them, you've won. You do this over and over until the game has nothing left to give, and that's that. This is, perhaps, the most reductively shallow and inaccurate appraisal in video games history. It's akin to saying racing games are just pressing two buttons and moving left and right to be faster than everyone else, or that shoot 'em-ups are nothing but holding down the fire button and avoiding bullets.

Jaz Rignall's weekly US communique arrives via tramp steamer just in time for tea.
Before I kick off proper, one thing I'd like to stress is that I really enjoy conversing with readers, or “users” as you're now known in these fancy future internet times. It's something I've done for years - as anyone who read my old magazines will attest to - and the wonders of the internet now enables it on a level I'd previously never have dreamed of. So, to get to the point, I read the comments posted here, and am genuinely interested in hearing what you have to say, be it feedback, observations, questions of whatever. Point is - let's talk! Whether it's helping you understand the mysteries of the American market, or just talking about games of yore, I'd love to make this weekly article a bit more of an interactive thing where we can chat and share ideas, and a little less of one-way dialog/promo tool for USgamer.

Digital Foundry | In Theory: Can next-gen fulfill the 1080p60 dream?
Watch Titanfall, Battlefield 4 and Killer Instinct at 60fps.
Hardcore gamers have been demanding it, and next-gen console could well deliver it: the joy of 60 frames per second gameplay, potentially at full HD 1080p resolution. The news from Microsoft's E3 press conference that Battlefield 4 runs at full frame-rate was impressive enough, but the fact that the next Halo game will also deliver 60fps action was a genuine surprise. Meanwhile, newcomer Titanfall from ex-Infinity Ward developers Respawn also appears to be aiming for the gold standard in fluidity and response in console gameplay while delivering breath-taking visuals.
