  5. Assassin's Creed Mirage delivers a polished experience on all current-gen consoles

Digital Foundry | Assassin's Creed Mirage delivers a polished experience on all current-gen consoles

Accomplished 30fps and 60fps modes for all hardware - including Series S.

Developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux, the Assassin's Creed series celebrates its 15th anniversary this year with Assassin's Creed Mirage. Originally meant as an expansion to 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla, the overall scale of Mirage is certainly dialled down this time around. Expect a shorter, narratively tighter adventure - which is no bad thing. Not every game has to be an epic. Mirage focuses on a single main character too this year, named Basim - a new recruit to the Assassin's Brotherhood, who unleashes his parkour skills on a beautiful realisation of ninth century Baghdad. From the arid city outskirts to the bustle of the Damascus gates, all of this is brought to life by the Ubisoft Anvil Engine. But to what extent, if any, has the tech evolved from AC Valhalla?

  15. A view from a wooden platform overlooking the sea in the game Rust. In the distance is an oil rig - the the same oil rig that has been painted onto a board in the foreground of the image. In the painting, the oil rig is silhouetted against a deep red sun that's dipping into the sea behind it. In 'reality', we see the oil rig in daylight. It's a striking painting.

Ah Rust, the perfect game for relaxing and enjoying the scenery, right? Wrong. It's a nightmare zone full of death, paranoia and the most irritating players you'll find in a multiplayer game. It's been made that way by design, of course - the driving idea behind Rust is survival, and having to watch your back for other players is a key part of this. Base-building becomes a matter of outwitting other players with solutions such as fake walls, impenetrable cave bases, and chests hidden under bear rugs. Journeys into the wilderness, meanwhile, require careful planning: just how much are you prepared to lose, and what backup resources do you have on standby for when you inevitably die?

  16. An illustration of a beholder enemy in Dungeons and Dragons - the big floating eyeball that has many eyeballs on stalks coming out from it. It's presented here in a kind of gold, embossed way, with only gold lines on a deep red background. It's a very fetching image!

We came this close to a total party kill in Dungeons & Dragons the other day, which means our whole group was nearly wiped out. And it really rattled me. I think it rattled the whole group. Even the Dungeon Master seemed shaken by it, which I didn't expect. And when he told us that in the 12 years he's been DMing, he's never had an entire group go that close to a total wipeout before, I began to understand why. He was convinced we were done for. I think we all were.

  20. Hands-on with AMD FSR 3 frame generation - taking the fight to DLSS 3

Digital Foundry | Hands-on with AMD FSR 3 frame generation - taking the fight to DLSS 3

Image quality looks good, but this is far from the finished article.

Last Friday, AMD finally released FSR 3 frame generation, its answer to Nvidia's DLSS 3. Two titles had supported added: Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum. We'd already seen demos of both games under controlled conditions at Gamescom back in August, but this was our first chance to go hands-on and to truly put FSR 3 through its paces. The verdict? Image quality in terms of generated frames is impressive, but elsewhere there are some fundamental issues AMD needs to address.

  28. An image of a masked gunman from Payday 3.

It's not that there's anything actually wrong with Payday 3. The levels are well-designed, encouraging the kind of outside-the-box thinking that rewards both the bold and the curious. The effervescent glee you feel each time you saunter past a security camera with a sports bag stuffed full of money on your back is unrivalled, and for those opting for a less stealthy approach, the gunplay – if requiring a little acclimation at first – is punchy and impactful.
