Review | Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn review
Does Microsoft's low budget, live action web series work as a standalone DVD release?
One of the biggest surprises - if not the only surprise - of Microsoft's Xbox One announcement was the revelation that Halo is being adapted into a TV show by none other than Steven Spielberg. As big name endorsements go, they don't come much bigger - even if any excitement must be tempered by the fact that Spielberg's sci-fi TV ventures tend to be a lot less illustrious than his movies. Falling Skies is a hit, but did anyone stick around to see how his critically panned Terra Nova series ended? And does anyone even remember his UFO saga, Taken?

Digital Foundry | Spec Analysis: Xbox One
Is PlayStation 4 really more powerful?
As a core gamer, it's difficult not to be frustrated by the manner of yesterday's Xbox reveal. Microsoft set out to champion its innovative platform, its vision for multimedia and a renewed focus on making Kinect relevant again as a convincing alternative to the traditional remote. But we wanted to know about the new generation of gaming and the approach in revealing Xbox One titles via trailers with no single identifiable example of actual live gameplay was an enormous error in judgement. The problem is that next-gen trailers look no different to current-gen trailers - so there was no groundbreaking innovation, no authenticity and therefore no buzz. Even the promising Call of Duty: Ghosts reveal - perhaps the closest thing we had to actual gameplay - was in-engine footage apparently running on Xbox One hardware. Yet there were no assurances that this was actually real-time, or that this would be the actual quality of the game we will be playing in November.

How it looks, caressing the controller, flapping around in front of Kinect 2.0 and hearing about the Skype "vision".
Remember that joke about two GameCubes taped together? Well, to me Xbox One looks like a giant Wii. Sure, it's got more cooling vents than a Deus Ex game (who can blame them after last time?) and size and appointment is more like an expensive amplifier from a mid-80s hi-fi than anything Nintendo's ever made, but that diagonal cut-off at the base of the front bezel gives it a similar profile.

UPDATE 2: Quantum Break appears to blend a live action TV show with a video game, with actions in one affecting the other. How you play the game impacts the show, and the show informs how you play the game." Defiance, anyone?
