Review | Call of Juarez: Gunslinger review
Hitch your wagon.
Following Call of Juarez's ill-advised ride into a modern day setting in 2011's The Cartel - a game that was, at best, culturally insensitive, with its facetious take on the contemporary drug wars in Mexico - we're back to the stirrups and sunsets of the series' spaghetti western beginnings. Morality and mortality in the autobiographic game about life's most feared dragon.
Joel Green is hysterical and there's nothing I can do about it. I try bouncing him on my knee, but whenever I stop the giggles make way for fresh anguish. This video game is something else. It's a puzzle without a solution. It's a game about pain, loss, fear and, ultimately, surrender. In many ways it's a disempowerment fantasy. Except, Joel Green's story is no fantasy.
