Review | Defiance TV pilot review
Syfy's tie-in with the new online game is a bold move, but is the show itself playing it too safe?
Editor's note: Our review of Defiance, the game, released last week, is currently underway; as with all massively multiplayer games, we only review from public servers after launch, and take our time. In the meantime, here's a look at the first episode of the TV show that ties in with it, due to hit screens next week.

Storyteller impressions: All the world's a stage in this IGF-winning puzzler
The butterfly effect.
Video games are often about choice. Do I cure the genophage? Should I save Doug or Carley? Who should I sleep with? Often these choices have unexpected outcomes and it's not until the end that we realise what shoulda/coulda/woulda been. Daniel Benmergui's upcoming experimental puzzle game Storyteller is different though. It allows an entire story to play out in the space of a few comic book-esque panels confined to one screen. It's the player's job to rearrange all of its components to orchestrate the outcome of your choosing.

Introducing the Wii U's best drinking game
Jeffrey is intoxicated by the upcoming Nordic party game Spin the Bottle... and beer.
Context matters. Out of context I can say that one of my fondest memories of this past GDC involves giving orders to a blindfolded woman crawling on all fours. Despite what you might think, this transpires on the GDC Play showfloor as part of the Danish and Swedish collaborative experimental Wii U party game, Spin the Bottle, "an innocent game for innocent children."

Review | The Silent Age review
Disco stew.
Stylish and simple, there's much to recommend in this free episodic point-and-click game from Danish indie studio House on Fire. An elegantly constructed time-hopping adventure, its only weakness is a fondness for puzzles that are just a little too easy.

Feature | All the world's a playground: Tiny Games heads to Kickstarter
Hide&Seek's app brings the spirit of WarioWare to your house, your town, and even your wallet.
Game designers - particularly, you could argue, those who are eyeing up Kickstarter - have always been interested in the money in your pocket, but there's a moment towards the end of the pitch video for Tiny Games when the precise nature of that interest gets a little weird. Sarah Butcher, a producer at Hide&Seek, the company that's making Tiny Games, suddenly grabs a handful of loose change, holds it up to the camera and then asks you to try and guess at the figure it adds up to. Estimating the cash you carry around could be a game, she suggests, and you could grade players on how close they get to the correct answer.

Video | Unravelling the mystery of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
The definition of insanity.
A website for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon went live yesterday while we were all laid low with chocolate-based bank holiday regret, but despite the timing this doesn't look like an April Fool's joke - it comes on the heels of various leaks and seems to be a downloadable game spinning off from last year's amazing Ubisoft Montreal open-world FPS.

Digital Foundry | Xiaomi MI2 review
Meet the import-only enthusiast's smartphone.
You can't buy the Xiaomi MI2 outside of China, but as smartphones go it's such a remarkable product that we felt that it was worth some serious coverage. Indeed, Xiaomi itself is a fascinating company: little-known outside its homeland, it commands the same kind of reputation and customer commitment that Apple enjoys in the West. There's certainly a synergy in terms of company ethos: Xiaomi builds great products, satisfying and indeed exceeding the expectations of its ever-growing fanbase. The MI2 exemplifies that philosophy. On a physical level, it offers up a state-of-the-art product that holds its own against the likes of the HTC One, but it packs all of that power into a much smaller, more iPhone-like chassis. This is backed up by an innovative, custom OS that ranks as one of the best Android experiences money can buy.

Review | BioShock Infinite review
Patriot games.
It would be hard not to begin with Elizabeth. Your computer-controlled female co-star is convincing enough that she becomes one of the most normal things in BioShock Infinite, a tightly wound first-person shooter where you summon fire and lightning from your fingertips as you fight your way through an impossible city suspended in the clouds. And like Andrew Ryan - the idealist who built Rapture, the city under the ocean that dominated the first BioShock - she is a constant presence.

Opinion | Saturday Soapbox: The high cost of high standards
Why the next-gen gamble is turning into Russian Roulette.
According to Square-Enix, Tomb Raider had a disappointing launch. Tomb Raider sold 3.4 million copes in its first month. These two sentences don't belong in the same universe, never mind the same paragraph. In light of this and other complications that saw the company post a $138 million loss for the year, it's currently planning a review of itself. Much like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, presumably this will read "Good gameplay, really dumb bosses."
