Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Tomb Raider
Uncharted territory.
We approached Tomb Raider with some degree of anticipation: we looked forward to a cross-platform game that could challenge the untouchable Uncharted series in terms of technical accomplishment, character development and gameplay. We wanted Sony first-party quality rolled out across multiple platforms without compromise, with additional "must-have" next-gen features built into an enhanced DirectX 11 PC version of the game. While the end-result doesn't quite match the polish of the latter entrants in the celebrated Naughty Dog trilogy, in most respects Tomb Raider more than meets our lofty expectations. If you're an Xbox 360 owner who's never played Uncharted, this Lara Croft reboot may come as something of a revelation and for PS3 gamers, Crystal Dynamics' effort should more than tide you over until Nathan Drake makes his inevitable return.

Feature | Metro 2033 retrospective
Going underground.
Metro 2033 is not a game that deserves a sequel. Too often the game stumbles in its quest to combine elements of shooter, stealth and horror, never confident enough in any one category. The story demands no clear continuation.

Assassin's Creed 4, Dragon's Dogma and Sleeping Dogs.
Ahoy there, Eurogamers. This week gave us our first look at a new Assassin's Creed set in Pirate Times. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag eschews Hollywood cliches and Treasure Island fantasy in favour of real legendary pirates who, Ubisoft promises, were just as exciting as krakens. Jean Guesdon, the game's creative director, told Mike what we should expect from a console generation-straddling Assassin's Creed (and it's not multiplayer naval combat).

Opinion | Saturday Soapbox: No Consolation
As big publishers struggle to come to terms with some next-gen concepts, here's hoping Sony and Microsoft are mindful of the competition.
A couple of weeks back, Ian Livingstone stated that "with the new Xbox, you supposedly have to have an internet connection, and the discs are watermarked, whereby once played on one console it won't play on another. So I think the generation after that will be digital-only." That's a hell of a lot of supposition, born out of half-sourced rumours and general speculation over the past few weeks by both game developers and the games media.

Darkwood is a promising top-down horror roguelike that has cult classic written all over it
From the developer of Kevin Costner's Tatanka Hunting Simulator 2013.
The three-person Poland-based Acid Wizard Studio may not bear much name recognition yet, but it definitely seems like a diverse, talented studio to keep an eye on. Last month I wrote about its hilarious Global Game Jam winner Kevin Costner's Tatanka Hunting Simulator 2013, and now it's showing off the debut trailer for its upcoming very polished looking top-down horror roguelike Darkwood.

Feature | Team Meat on cats, consoles, and its wish for Super Meat Boy
Not keen on future consoles, but will develop for Nintendo if Super Meat Boy could join Super Smash Bros.
Super Meat Boy creators Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes at Team Meat really like cats. While Refenes only has one feline companion, McMillen has four - one of which, the hairless Tammy, played a fairly large role in Indie Game: The Movie, last year's high-profile film that detailed the team's plight as it created Super Meat Boy. Despite this, McMillen isn't afraid to call Tammy "a total bitch". I sure hope Tammy isn't reading this.

Review | Impire review
Deeply floored.
Let's just get this out of the way: Impire does not hold a candle to Dungeon Keeper, neither in its design nor its execution. Like ripping off a sticking plaster, it's best to break the news quickly. It might sting a little, but it's best to tear away that hope so that we can start the healing process proper. With that out of the way, let's establish what Impire is rather than what it isn't.

Feature | "There is a plan": Project Awakened plots a post-Kickstarter course
The Kickstarter's over, but Phosphor Games' superhero adventure may continue.
What happens when a Kickstarter fails? In the case of Phosphor Games, the Chicago-based studio whose superhero action game Project Awakened stopped shy of its $500,000 target earlier this week, they get a call from me, asking a series of fairly insensitive questions. What went wrong? What did you learn? What's next?

Sonar-based first-person survival game Pulse now on Kickstarter
Award-winning student project all grown up, needs money.
Last summer I wrote about a nifty-looking first-person survival game called Pulse built by the five-person Team Pixel Pi at Vancouver Film School. It starred a blind girl making her way through a cave by tossing around cute critters then using echolocation to envision the world around her in various multicoloured layers. It was pretty dope.
