  3. Paper Mario: Sticker Star review

Review | Paper Mario: Sticker Star review

    Slightly faded.

The thing about Mario is that, as much as he looks like a little dungareed chap, he's not really a character. Ever since Nintendo's rise in the 1980s, he's been an icon: the embodiment of pure gaming joy, a wah-hooing hero eternally saving Mushroom Kingdoms in between entering every sporting event going. It's funny to think of how many different Marios there have been - and it's this aspect of the character that Paper Mario has always riffed on.

    Uncharted territory.

If the concept of rhythm-game-cum-guitar-tutor Rocksmith has intrigued you, then there's a good chance you fall into the same category of guitarist that I do: a gamer who's fumbled behind the bike sheds of musical ambition in the past and left feeling rather sheepish and incapable, yet still enamoured with the prospect of making more meaningful progress.

  14. Kairo review

    Review | Kairo review

    A game of thrones.

'Numinous' is what used to be called a ten-cent word. That means you can be smug that you know what it means, but when you then try and actually use it in a sentence, you end up feeling a weird strain of overbearing shame. 'Numinous' refers to anything that provides a strong sense of a supernatural, often religious, presence, I gather; as terms go, it does not play particularly well with other parts of the English language. It does not land lightly on the page, does it? “Joe opened the microwave and immediately felt numinous.” “How was the corporate picnic, darling?” “Oh, you know, numinous.” Well buckle up, word fans: Kairo feels like rather a numinous sort of game, and I'm afraid there's nothing much we can do about that.

    Keep the red flag flying.

Every now and then seemingly every development team on Earth will become obsessed by something glittery. They'll crowd round it and make hubbub noises, before dashing back to their design coops to create their vision. For a slice of the last decade the obsession was rudimentary NPC squad control. Every game was at it whether it needed it (Brothers in Arms, SWAT 4, Republic Commando) or not (Half-Life 2, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault). Freedom Fighters, however, did it best.

Digital Foundry | iPad mini review

    Gadget chic.

Across 31 months and four different iPads, Apple has played it remarkably safe when it comes to revising the form factor of its mega-selling tablet. Edges have been tapered, heft has been reduced (and then bulked up a touch), but the overall size, shape and feel of the product has remained fairly consistent while processing power and display quality have been the focus for change. These aspects are very important for some, but for the mainstream audience the look and feel of the device is perhaps more relevant.
