Tired of that giant white slab of a PlayStation 5 in your living room and looking to add a bit of pizzazz to your surroundings? Well then Sony might just, depending on your idea of tasteful, have what you're looking for: three new metallic console covers (and matching controllers) that are almost certainly not going to match your existing decor!

  2. Artwork for Amnesia: The Bunker showing a scene viewed from the protagonist's perspective. His raised gun is visible in the foreground, pointing toward a shadowy creature looming in the centre of the image.

Frictional Games fans could be forgiven for thinking the horror-focused studio has been getting a little soft in recent years, having introduced death-free and monster-free modes in post-launch updates for its acclaimed SOMA and Amnesia: Rebirth. This year, though, it's going in completely the opposite direction, and its recently launched WW1 horror Amnesia: The Bunker will be getting even more nerve-frayingly horrifying, just in time for Halloween.

  6. Tomb Raider 2 - Outside Croft Manor on a cloudy day with Lara and her butler. Lara wears gym clothes.

Although the specifics change, it seems like there's always a period in games that feels especially distant. And I mean distant in a wonderful way. The hardware may only be up in the attic or photographed and prepped for eBay, but the games themselves feel remote, bizarre, unprecedented and alien. No game looks as briskly abstract as G-Police at the moment. MDK looks like a game about insects, but insects covered in early Stealth aircraft armour.

  9. A stark illustration from Mediterranea Inferno showing a blond young man, Andrea, sat at a table beneath a pergola, almost a silhouette against the bright summer sun.

Are you a good listener? It's a skill, maybe an art, that I wish I could get better at. I nod along and ask appropriate questions as much as I can, but I'm often lost in my own head, listening to my own internal monologue - listening, kind of, but with an eye peering out the window.

  20. Lies of P close up of the hero in a moody setting.

A game developer has to be pretty brave to attempt a Soulslike, I feel. Just the fact that they’re still called Soulslikes, nearly a decade and a half on (and surely longer than it took for "Doom clones" to turn into first-person shooters), is probably a sign. FromSoftware just keeps banging out top notch examples of a genre they created, and follow-ups, in Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring, that all have their own distinct variances from the core template, so plucky pretenders to the throne really need a unique selling point. The Surge has its near-future sci-fi stylings, Nioh leans into character action game combat, and Jedis Fallen Order and Survivor combine Uncharted-esque traversal with a little movie licence from the seventies. New contender Lies of P has, umm, puppets.

  24. A level map in Wargroove 2 with lots of units in play.

I've been really excited to play Wargroove 2 because I liked the original game, but I wanted to love it. It was a blend of Advance Wars and early Fire Emblem games, a turn-based tactics affair that saw you spreading out across dinky grid-based maps, gathering resources, turning them into units and exploring the dense rock-paper-scissors potential of the various ensuing matchups. It was a loving and thoughtful thing, but it felt a little dry to me - a little too studious when it came to its inspirations.
