Review | FUEL
Pumped.
I always try and avoid falling back on such tired journalistic devices as claiming a game is "X meets Y", but in the narrow confines of the racing genre, where there can be barely a hair's breadth of distinction between different titles, I'm prepared to indulge in a little cliché. It's especially tempting to break out the comparisons when discussing FUEL, the latest racing franchise starter from Codemasters, home to such genre standards as TOCA, GRID and the Colin McRae Rally series.

Review | Alice
A mysterious, enchanting use of the Quake III engine.
If there is one title that has stirred up controversy recently, this is it. Strangely, the focus of this debate has not been the gameplay merits, graphics or even the gothic atmosphere of American McGee's Alice, but rather the title. "Who is American McGee?" people cry, "and how can he defile Lewis Carroll's original work like this, and then attach his own name to it?". The answer to the first question is relatively simple - American McGee is a level designer who previously worked at iD software on games including Doom 2 and Quake. The second, however, is harder, and largely depends on how you perceive the games' take on the original stories. Alice is set some years after the original Wonderland tales. A fire in Alice's house killed both her parents, leaving her the only survivor - but psychologically scarred by the experience. Relegated to a mental asylum, she is drawn once again into Wonderland, only to find that the fairytale world has become twisted and evil under the influence of the Queen of Hearts. Thus begins Alice's quest to free Wonderland from tyranny - and herself from madness. Worthy of special mention is the excellent trailer for the game, which can be found at http://www.alice.ea.com, which shows off some of the superb FMV from the game.

Review | Battle Fantasia
Minus the walking broomsticks.
Why does it always take ages for the UK to get the latest 2D fighters? The Japanese have been enjoying Street Fighter IV in their arcades for nearly half a year, America got a console port of Arcana Heart with Europe once again overlooked, and as far as I'm aware there's only one BlazBlue arcade cabinet in the country at the Casino in London - not very helpful if you live in Cornwall. But after many months of waiting the UK is at least getting a console port of Battle Fantasia for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Review | Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II
Powerfist of Charisma +2.
What do Space Marines talk about? Dawn of War II's campaign answers that pressing question in its excellent tale of a handful of 41st-century hyper-squaddies. Between missions the muscular mega-men chat amongst themselves, explaining the story and making decisions about how to proceed. They even share some personal gossip. At one point, the long-haired scout character says something like: "Tarkus, Avitus, there's something I've wanted to ask you for so long, but I've been reluctant..." I couldn't wait to find out what he was going to ask, but I'll leave you to discover what he's talking about for yourself.

Review | 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
"That bitch took my skull!"
According to 50 Cent himself, the man you spend most of Blood on the Sand controlling had a lot of input into the game's design early on. Perhaps he's a big fan of Gears of War and The Club, then, because someone certainly was. This is a fast-paced cover shooter that riffs on both games and fills the gaps with unlockable melee combos, beefy weapons and exclusive music.
