Review | Lord of the Rings: Conquest
The Return of the King?
The Sacking of The Shire, the final stage in Lord of the Rings: Conquest's campaign mode, is a distressing scene. In a wicked reversal of the storyline originally laid down by Tolkien, Sauron - the Dark Lord himself - arrives at Bag End cottage with a Balrog on a leash. Amongst the vegetable patches the hobbits run to and fro in the frantic, fearful pandemonium of an unexpected attack. In their fat, stubby little hands they hold nothing to protect themselves save kitchen knives and sapling bows.

Feature | Coming Attractions: Fighting & Strategy
Games of death.
Peculiar bedfellows, perhaps? There was always going to be a clash somewhere in this year's Coming Attractions as we sorted our way through 12 categories, but you could argue there's more that unites fighting and strategy than divides them. Both are about trying to take maximum of advantage of your opposition's weaknesses, both reward patience, concentration and consideration, and as of Red Alert 3 both have a thing for impractical women's clothing.

Review | Mirror's Edge
Runner up?
Well then, this is going to divide audiences down the middle. It's an ambitious game, but it manages to match its achievements with irritations at every turn; it's bold and forward-thinking, yet stilted and old-fashioned. Some will be able to overlook the gaping flaws, but others will never appreciate its moments of brilliance, and both positions are justifiable. Ultimately there's no right answer, but there are at least two things that prolonged exposure reveal: there are a handful of the crucial parts of a masterpiece here, and the end result still feels like a work in progress.

New PAL Releases Roundup - 16/01/09
EA's back from its hols, but nobody else is.
And we're back! Although apparently the games industry isn't, because the only games of note this week are an admittedly wicked PC port of one of 2008's brightest sparks, and Pandemic's attempt to graft Tolkien onto Battlefront.

Interview | Watchmen: The End is Nigh
Eurogamer meets Dave Gibbons.
When, back in early 2007, Watchmen director Zack Snyder suggested that any game that tied in to the film would have to be "More than the movie", beardy comic book fans nodded in sage appreciation. After all, the original Watchmen series is the sacred cow of comics - it popularised the term 'graphic novel', and in the process pulled funnybooks kicking and screaming from poly-bagged basement dungeons onto the sun-dappled coffee tables of hipster posers everywhere. So it was a bit of a surprise when the announcement of the Watchmen: The End is Nigh movie tie-in game revealed that 'More than the movie' translated into 'download-only shonky looking beat-'em up' - but there you go.

Review | Astro Tripper
Bon voyage.
It's easy to like Astro Tripper, the latest frenetic shoot-'em-up from the makers of Live Arcade's Mutant Storm series. It's just difficult to get too excited about it. It's a solid and enjoyable PSN arcade experience but it never quite finds the hook, or achieves the sublime crescendo, that defines the best of its genre.
