Review | Skate 2
Falling down.
Turning weaknesses into strengths is an appealingly simple approach to take with sequels. The main reason more developers don't try it is pretty simple as well: it's very hard. Much easier, then, to simply ignore the cracks that are forming, paper over them and let the problem quietly spread around the entire structure until, one day, several years down the line, it undermines the whole enterprise and you're left with a pretty mound of toxic rubble.

Turning heads.
The screenshots don't do it justice. It's a common enough refrain, but it's become increasingly popular as new console hardware has offered us ever more lavish visual feasts. As the arts and sciences of animation, lighting, special effects and visual filters come into their own, there's less and less to be gleaned about how a game actually looks from a still image.

Review | XBLA: Age of Booty and War World
Yarrr latest potential purchases.
After the rather soggy Pirates: The Key of Dreams on WiiWare, and with the loosely related Pirates vs Ninjas Dodgeball doing bad things to my brain, I wasn't in a particularly receptive mood for yet more downloadable buccaneering seamanship. The fact that Age of Booty managed to thaw my frosty pirate prejudice, even slightly, is clearly a victory of sorts.

FIFA, Phoenix Wright 3, dregs.
Did you know that FIFA 08 sold over 1.4 million copies last year in the UK alone? It was the biggest-selling multiformat game, even eclipsing Brain Training and Call of Duty 4. As of this week - just over a year since its release in the last days of September 2007 - it's 36th in Chart-Track's All Formats Top 40. Anyway, we're big fans of the new one, but no, we don't know what "Let's FIFA 09" is all about. Although we do like the pitch-side translations around the globe. ECHATE UN FIFA 09!

Review | WiiWare Roundup
Plättchen Twist 'n' Paint, Midnight Pool, Bomberman.
For about half an hour, this Austrian "puzzle shooter" had me convinced my remote was broken. Then I spent half an hour wondering if the game was broken. Finally, after finding an interview with the developer online, I discovered that everything was actually as it should be. I'd just been playing with the nunchuk plugged in, which completely changes the controls. It would have been nice if the game itself had been able to communicate this rather vital bit of info, but simplicity certainly isn't Plättchen's strong suit.

Review | FIFA 09
Final score.
The myth that EA makes the bimbo football game and Konami makes the cultured one is probably dead by now, but just in case, I have sent it to McDonald's at 2am to spill Joey Barton's pint. FIFA has long since put its dark, deformed days of knee-length grass and knee-deep gameplay behind it, and with this 2009th instalment it delivers solid, realistic football along with its trademark compellingly polished presentation. And careful, because it probably is trademarked.
