Review | WarCraft III: Reign Of Chaos
Blizzard resumes reign over RTS genre.
Real-time strategy franchises tend to attract fanatical followings, from the legions of Command & Conquer fanboys to the near religious fervency of Total Annihilation devotees. None more so, however, than Blizzard's WarCraft series - and its futuristic spin-off, StarCraft - a series of RTS games which have honed to perfection a formula which balances relatively simple gameplay with surprisingly complex mechanics, innovative graphics and a healthy dollop of bizarre humour. It's a long time since the last game in the series grabbed the attention of the strategy gamer, making WarCraft III one of the most anticipated PC titles ever; can it possibly live up to the legacy of its forebears?

Review | Tron
The future, 25 years ago.
The thing about arcade gaming that people often forget is that you were totally at the whim of your local arcade operator. If they decided, for whatever reason, not to buy in a particular cabinet, then that was that. You never got to play with it. And such was the case with Tron, a game that my befreckled early '80s self was never exposed directly to. This makes reviewing Tron on Xbox Live Arcade in 2008 trickier than it might be, but I suppose it also means I'm less blinded by the inevitable ingrained nostalgia that easily deflects critics from fairly re-evaluating these relics.

Review | Arkadian Warriors
Archaic gameplay.
There should be no shame in sticking to a formula. I can bake a cake if I do what Delia tells me. And those cars seem fairly content rolling around on those wheels. Even cheating in exams still works perfectly. So why should Wanako have to make hover boards for Arkadian Warriors? It's just a bite-sized action role-playing game for Live Arcade after all. And so, unapologetically, it hasn't.

But what about Rockstar? Fox?
Gosh, must have slurped one coffee too many. Eyes a little pinned open and beginning to see things and best not try too hard to think but just plough on and fill some of this space with some words. Lots to talk about if you consider Nintendo and its generation-leading sales figures, or if you are roused into debate by Rockstar and its continued efforts to get Manhunt 2 in UK shops, or if Fox News and its ignorance towards nudity in Mass Effect boiled your blood, or if Sony saying PS3 will beat 360 in Europe by summer makes you frisky. Or, or, or.

It's a goodun.
Nintendo's GameBoy Advance has sold more than one million units in the UK since its launch in June 2001, the platform holder is delightedly reporting today. The GBA's popularity has grown with the release of (go on, lynch me for saying it) killer applications such as Advance Wars and popular revamps like Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, which shipped last Friday. Since just prior to the console's launch, this website has published over 25 reviews. If you want another useless statistic, GBA software enjoys one of the highest average scores of any system covered, apart from the Neo Geo Pocket Color, for which all the games were golden and the sun shone out of its expansion port. Bless you, SNK. The recently released Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 is currently one of the five most popular games in Europe, according to the ELSPA. Duck-based spinning puzzles return.
Kuru Kuru Kururin was one of those inspired game concepts that just plain worked, and worked over and over again, standing up to literally hours of frustrated replaying of the same levels. It was a brutally unforgiving premise - you guide a spinning stick through a maze without brushing the sides - but its thirty or so levels and cute, anime-style characters with propeller heads all came together to create an off-the-wall cult puzzle hit. Unfortunately, the Yanks never got it. This isn't some juvenile dig at their mental capabilities (but thanks for planting the seeds to kick that one off), it's a simple fact. Kuru Kuru Kururin was released in Japan, and then in Europe, but if you live in the United States you can't buy a domestic copy. And Nintendo is very sorry. To make up for this fact, the Japanese gaming giant has in fact unveiled Kururin Paradise, which is either a sequel or an enhanced version of the original game - it's difficult to tell. IGN makes mention of a couple of new sub-games not included in the original. One of the levels apparently has forced side scrolling with obstacles strewn about, no doubt piling on the pressure, and in another there are rows and rows of cannonballs hurtling towards you. A further level still consists of mowing a lawn with your rotating stick. If Kururin Paradise can live up to its lineage then this could be another hit for Nintendo. Due out at the end of the year, we're certainly looking forward to it. Let's just hope and pray that Nintendo doesn't reverse its previous decision and deprive us of the game instead. Starts to sound exciting.
If you thought that Nintendo's E-Reader device sounded a bit childish, prepare to revise your opinion. E-Reader plugs into GameBoy Advance and reads data from an embedded data strip in cheap trading cards, but it wasn't until recently that Nintendo confirmed the sorts of things which will appear on these cards. Due out on September 16th in the US priced $39.99 including one card, E-Reader will play host to a number of things, including a series of NES E-Cards. Sold in packs of five (priced $4.95), the cards will include the likes of Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Pinball, Tennis and Excitebike according to IGN. Other E-Cards will feature Game & Watch titles, Pokemon The Card Game software and an Animal Crossing E-Card which can talk to the forthcoming GameCube release via the GBA-Cube linkup cable.
