Activision enters Rock Band row
Blames Harmonix/MTV.
Activision has struck back at claims made by Rock Band developer Harmonix that it is holding up the release of a patch that would allow its Guitar Hero III peripheral to work with the PS3 version of the competing title, arguing that Harmonix and its owner MTV would not be in this position if they had accepted "Activision's offer to reach an agreement" about compatibility. Presumably by "reach an agreement", they mean "hand over the money all of it chop chop".

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway
Oh no - this is the road to hell.
Eagle-eyed readers will recall that only a couple of weeks ago, we ran a delectable news tit-bit in which Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford opined that, despite the departure of Call of Duty for pastures modern, there's plenty of meat left on the bones of World War II videogaming yet. Some of you agreed, and leapt to the defence of the WW2 games; others did that rude thing where you yawn loudly behind your hands.

We'll be the judge of that.
Often a kick up the arse is exactly what the doctor ordered. Top Spin 2 was rushed; French developer PAM has no qualms about admitting it, suggesting at least something had to be offered on the new batch of consoles sooner rather than later. Still, this sort of behaviour has come to be expected from games machines finding their feet, as developers fiddle with new creation tools and begin to get to grips with the fresh grunt on offer. So, you may say we understand why Top Spin 2 was a flimsy and incremental offering in the series then, but ask fifty pounds for it and our sympathetic nature soon disperses.

Review | SimCity Societies
Constructive criticism
Back at the dawn of this bold new millennium, EA and Maxis had the idea of creating a game that would sit neatly in between their two globe-conquering franchises - the detail-obsessed SimCity and the close-up antics of The Sims. Simsville was to be the name, but the project was canned in 2001 when it became clear that more straight Sims spin-offs were what the public craved most. Six years later, and Simsville is back - at least in spirit.

Where's Crash? It's Showtime.
Like a mum on her kid's first day at school before that dishy gardener shows up, lots of people are worried about Burnout Paradise. And with good reason, too. Paradise's crazed next-gen design document involves no menus, right down to players not having an option to instantly restart challenges, and a focus on online multiplayer that's entirely new to the series. Then there's the removal of Crash mode and the replacing of levels with a single, huge open city.
