Feature | Wii: 2007's Most Wanted
Something for the Wii-kend?
Of all Nintendo's various achievements, surely its most consistent is in simultaneously pissing off and delighting its faithful European customers. For twenty-five years the company has wowed us with innovative technology and wonderfully robust and inventive games, filling reservoirs of consumer goodwill in a way few other multinationals manage. In tension with this, interminable localisation delays, sloppy, bordered conversions and,- most heart-breakingly - an ever-slim line-up of releases has made it clear that Europe is literally the least of the Japanese company's global concerns.

Review | Loki
Not the Lie-Smith's greatest trick.
When we previewed French developer Cyanide's action RPG title Loki at the start of last month, our conclusion was that the game was shaping up to be pretty enjoyable and entertaining, without actually contributing anything new or particularly interesting to the action RPG genre.

Review | The Settlers
Don't settle for this.
Deep down, I think we all knew this wasn't going to end well. Multiple console versions of the venerable resource management game (spawned on the Amiga, popularised on PC) were promised as far back as 2002 yet never actually materialised. Eventually only the DS version remained, and even that slithered around the release schedule like the last fingernail-sized remnant of soap in a large bath. And then even that quietly vanished from retailer websites, finally emerging into the daylight as a GAME exclusive.

Not long now.
Never mind Super Mario Galaxy - the one forthcoming Wii first party title that has me frothing with giddy expectation is the latest in the Metroid Prime series. After the majestic beast that was 2004's Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Retro Studios latest offering was always going to get the red carpet treatment from us - appropriate, given that Nintendo's swanky new offices are literally next door to the Queen's modest abode in Windsor.

DIY kingdom, flatpack dwarves.
You there, PC strategy gamer, I bet you're thinking "where's my MMORTS?" No? Well you should be. All these other genres are poncing about getting their own fancy persistent world variants, MMORPG, MMOFPS, MMOFFS, but what do you get? A poke in the eye, most likely. But fret not, because Silverlode and Wahoo Studios are making game that will attempt to fill that awkwardly acronym'd niche like some kind of plug in an Intel socket. And, even more radically, they're going to do it for free.

Interview | Army of Two
Live together, die less, experience greater combat variety.
With Army of Two, EA Montreal believes it's struck on something that even the best co-operative shooters - like Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas - are missing out on: designing for co-op from the ground up. What that gives you is systems like Aggro - borrowed from MMOs, Aggro is the concept of drawing enemy attention in order to let your partner slip around unmolested.

A demonstration of beauty.
Hype is a fickle and unkind mistress. The games it chooses to touch seem almost chosen at random (or at least, at the whim of a marketing division, which often seems to be just about the same thing), with many wonderful games completely passed over by its gentle caress.

Review | Vagrant Story
Square, one of the most prolific and celebrated developers on the PlayStation, offered up three swansongs for the console. One was Final Fantasy IX, a technically stunning and graphically gorgeous - but ultimately divisive - title which returned to the roots of the Final Fantasy series for its inspiration. One was Chrono Cross, a vastly acclaimed sequel to the much-loved Chrono Trigger. Finally, there was Vagrant Story; a return to the world of Ivalice for the team who made the epic Final Fantasy Tactics, and arguably the most lavish 3D title ever produced for the console.

Review | Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Despite being one of the longest-running RPG series in Japan, the Shin Megami Tensei series remained largely unknown in the west until relatively recently. Perhaps that's because the edgy, dark stories which lie at the heart of the series sat poorly with the kind of high fantasy JRPGs which were making headway in the US and Europe. Perhaps it's simply because publishers had no idea what to make of these bizarre tales, which mixed up twisted characters in contemporary Tokyo with demon summoning and blood magic rituals. Either way; for quite a few years, we all missed out.
