Zack attack.
It's hard not to wish Square-Enix would just set aside all this Compilation of Final Fantasy VII nonsense and announce the near-inevitable PS3 remake of the seminal RPG from which it all stems. The company's collection of FFVII-themed new titles, delivered across myriad different media - game, film and anime - comes across as unfocused and grasping more than considered or generous. The unlikely (and un-requested) excursions into new genres on distinct platforms is also confusing to both newcomers and fans alike. It's as if the company knows it has a goldmine of an IP on its hands but is unsure as to quite how best to excavate it.

In Sony's new PS3 game PAIN.
Teenagers thrive on random chaos. You don't need an extensive market research report to tell you that. But Sony went ahead and commissioned one anyway, found out that the kids also like creativity, community, competition and other c-words, and the result is a new physics-based "action comedy" game built by Idol Minds called PAIN. It's due out exclusively on PS3 Store this Christmas.

Review | City of Heroes
More ill-advised spandex than a The Darkness tribute band convention.
On the main forum which I while away my working hours, there's a thread. It's about City of Heroes, though is currently named "City of Hot Mammas". That'll have inevitably changed by the time this review hits the net-presses; the moderators are taking great joy at changing it randomly whenever boredom strikes, just to keep things interesting. At the time of writing, it's just shy of 1,500 posts. Cute, you may think, but no biggie.

Karaoke goes next-gen.
Who could fail to be outraged by the poor score awarded to Scooch at the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday? All right, they may a bit Steps Lite, or perhaps even Steps Lidl, but their entry had it all - stupid dancing, stupid outfits and stupid lyrics about flying flags and fellatio. And yet they were ignored by almost all the judges across Europe, rendering this year's contest even more of an absolute travesty than usual.

We check out the new DS and PSP Tactics titles.
In 1949 the New Statesman held a contest inviting readers to send in parodies of the great novelist and playwright Graham Greene. So distinctive and unique was his writing style that it apparently invited parody. A few weeks later the publication announced the winners and, to both their and his surprise, second place went to Graham Greene himself, who had written in secretly using a pseudonym.

Review | Mercury Meltdown Revolution
Revelation, more like.
As everyone who's reading this sentence for the second time knows, Mercury was originally designed to work with a PSP motion sensor that never made it into production, so Mercury Meltdown Revolution is a very logical release. Other developers have had to sit around making up reasons for you to flap your arms; Ignition Banbury already had one, and a very good one, too. Critically acclaimed on the PSP even without the sensor, the second game won itself 9/10 just a few short months ago, as we reasoned that while it may be good at raising your temperature, it's still a timeless example of how to pit player against environment. Can it repeat the trick on the console that might as well be its home?

Halo 3 Beta: A Beginner's Guide
Lovely this time of year.
So you've read the first impressions here. This Beginner's Guide walks you through each of the three new maps, pointing out scenery of note, general level structure and the odd tip that could possibly stem the inevitable early shame of being owned by someone with a gamer tag such as Wank Static. Or Girls Gun Wild. Think of this as a Rough Guide travel journal, relayed by Louis Theurox running around like a headless chicken in an intergalactic warzone.
