Review | Final Fantasy XII
Nothing lasts... But nothing is lost.
Sometimes videogame publishers are lazy and dull. They find a formula that works and they stick with it rigidly until every drop has been wrung from both the game, and its audience. They build interminable sequels, demanding from their development teams that everything should be by the numbers, within the lines, and comfortably corresponding to the expectations of the audience, and of the management team. They take good ideas and stretch them out into annual updates, robbing them of their impact and leeching their original creators of the fundamental desire to create. Sometimes, even the most dedicated fan of the interactive medium - particularly the most dedicated fan of the interactive medium - can't help but be a little depressed and downhearted.

Time for another WW2 shooter? Time, geddit?
I'm concerned that we need a new world war. The WW2 fatigue in gaming is unavoidable. So much so that even at Midway's hands-on event for Hour of Victory, the presentation began with a defence for why another Second World War shooter was necessary, before we were even told what this one was about. And while they argue effectively that there's still room in the market, surely this can only be for a limited amount of time. What are they going to make all the videogames about in fifty years time? For the sake of the industry, we have to start nuking each other.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Some things never die.
I'm not convinced that shooting zombies in the face will ever be a dull thing to do. Maybe it's the satisfying way their brains explode all over the screen with a 'thunk', or the rasping guttural moan in that split second of realisation as their arm splits off from their torso. Even Capcom's really bad Gun Survivor games had a certain charm about them. It's about disconnecting your brain, adopting a spaced-out expression and focusing your entire being into your trigger finger.

Interview | Guitar Hero III's Rock 'N' Roll Star
Kai Huang on features, downloads, more.
It's been an interesting few weeks for RedOctane. Guitar Hero II has finally launched on Xbox 360, but the publisher - now part of Activision - has finally caught sight of what the game's developer, Harmonix, has gone off to make with Electronic Arts and MTV. Rock Band might well be described as a spiritual successor to Guitar Hero, and the decision to introduce other instruments, and vocals, arguably raises doubts about the real Guitar Hero III, in development at Neversoft, and due out on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PS2 later this year.
