In our time, no foreign army has ever occupied American soil. Until now.
World in Conflict started life two years ago as a multiplayer concept: specifically, it was born from the desire to recreate the accessibility of first person deathmatch games but in a real-time strategy game. The game's developer, Massive Entertainment, wanted to create an RTS title that's as easy to pick up and play as an FPS, and the key to doing that, it reckoned, was to emulate the respawn function that's a hallmark of most arena combat games. And it's this that gives the game its defining characteristic: when your units die, the credits they cost to produce are returned and can be used again to produce further reinforcements. Thus, every player has the same amount of resources and is competing on a totally level playing field.

Review | Lunar Knights
Good night, sunshine?
I am constantly amazed. Not by anything special, you understand, but by those normal things in life that can easily be explained away by anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of science. Like the way it's possible to stand up inside a train and walk safely forwards while the outside moves at a high velocity. Witchcraft, if you ask me. Or how a television can effortlessly pulls together a signal in order to create a perfect representation of a human being. You're telling me it's been sent through the air like that? Get away! And eggs - don't even get me started.

Review | Picross DS
We'll picross if this isn't a hit in the West.
This review was supposed to be written two days ago. Then it was supposed to be written yesterday. Then it was supposed to be written this morning. Now it's the afternoon and it's still a struggle to stop playing Picross DS for long enough to review it. So it's not just Slitherlink. Picross DS is the latest in the long line of addictive logic puzzle games on Nintendo's handheld that monopolise your every waking moment and imprint themselves on the inside of your eyelids when you're hoping that sleep might offer some respite. So while John Walker gave up on the Game Boy versions of Picross to spend more time with Slitherlink, the release of Picross on the DS might make him want to reconsider.

Review | Harvest Moon DS
On the wane.
For me, the Harvest Moon series reached its pinnacle with Magical Melody on the GameCube. Unbelievably, this still hasn't been released in Europe, possibly due to an over-estimation of demand that led to a sizeable unsold surplus of previous GameCube title, A Wonderful Life.

Review | Pac-Man Rally
Pac to the future.
I still remember what it was like when Super Mario Kart first came out, back in 1992. Obviously, there was the addictive glee of a beautifully realised and devilishly silly racing game, the sense of witnessing the arrival of a classic. But more than that was the genre-hopping freedom it heralded. Hard to imagine now, but back then the very idea of a famous platform character taking the wheel of a dinky go-kart was fresh and innovative.

Review | Xiaolin Showdown
Kung Fu Hassle.
It's amazing what some developers think will pass for a decent game when kids are the main demographic. Contrary to popular belief, kids aren't stupid and with so many of them having grown up surrounded by games from an extremely early age, most can now tell an absolute classic from a sloppy cash-in.

Review | NFL Street 3
Cul-de-sacking.
I'd suspect that Chad Johnson breathed a little sigh of relief when they chose him for the cover of NFL Street 3. That now puts him out of the running for a position on the box of its bigger brother, the perennial Madden, and the ominous omen of doom that accompanies it. That infamous curse which purportedly lands injuries and performance dips on the bold stars that grace the front of each year's edition may be a lot of superstitious nonsense, but it never pays to be too careful, you know. Instead, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver gurns on the front of the last last-gen EA Big American football title. Look! There he is thrusting a multi-coloured football in our faces, flicking three of his digits at us in a gangsta-style pose. He's safe.

Review | Asphalt: Urban GT 2
Nothing but a traffic violation.
I don't even want to waste your time with this one, so let's do this efficiently. I'm going to go through some absolutely terrible things about Asphalt 2 and you just stop reading when you're convinced you're not going to buy it. I mean it. Go spend the time doing whatever it is people do when they're not playing video games. Go take your shopping for a walk, or water your granddad or something. In this small way Asphalt 2 will take up a bit less of your life and we can both feel victorious.

Preview of the game of the movie of the animation of the toy.
This is a cursed licence. First we got the Ocean-published abomination in the mid 80s, which we'd rather not try and recall. Then the Japan-only Transformers Tataki on PS2, which was made by huge Transformers enthusiasts and managed to nail the setting with 100 faithfully recreated robots. Unfortunately it forgot the whole game part. The next Transformers game was also on PS2, this time a product of Melbourne House via Atari, which ended up wonderfully enjoyable third person shooter that just didn't use the licence. No cut scenes, no recognisable locations, a fistful of robots we knew but far more that we didn't and a transforming ability that felt a little clumsy.

Review | The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles
I'm mad, me. Crazy.
Oblivion had more than its fair share of extra baubles and adventures tacked on over the past year, but this is the big one: a full-blown expansion. Not just another quest arc, but a full-blown extra plane of Oblivion, complete with hordes of new monsters, NPCs and items. Although not as enormous as the landmass of the original game The Shivering Isles are an entirely new geography in which to take up quests, wander aimlessly, club wrong-doers, and rummage around in mushrooms.
