Review | Micro Machines V4
It's not big and it's not clever.
Crisis, team. Crisis. The misuse of "franchise" is starting to bother me. These days, I can't click for more than about two homepages before encountering something like "the Zelda franchise". It's not. When Capcom makes Zelda games for Nintendo, those have been franchised out. When Nintendo releases Twilight Princess, it's not "the latest addition to the popular Zelda franchise". In today's case, Codemasters' Micro Machines just about counts as a franchise, because the developer's been allowed to make games that trade under the name of Hasbro's collectible toys. In most cases though, the word we're looking for is "series", which implies, you know, a set of products or activities.

Feature | Investigating the PSP's PSone emulator
As Sony laments another security breach.
When the Sony PSP launched in Japan at the tail end of 2004, it looked set to dominate handheld gaming for the foreseeable future. The machine had it all: ultra-desirability, state-of-the-art specs, all-encompassing support from all major publishers, plus every major Sony and third party gaming franchise on the way. But a combination of shovelware PS2 ports, a basic lack of understanding as to what is required from a handheld game experience and a high price point has held the machine back dramatically. At the same time, Nintendo's DS has caught the imagination in a way that Sony seems unable to match.

Review | GripShift
Slippery devil.
Say what you like about the PlayStation 3 (oh you are), but if it's gunning for my affections then it can think about putting the gun down: resurrecting GripShift is the sort of public service that deserves applauding. Cruelly overlooked on the PSP - condemned for "flaws" that were, in many cases, virtually fundamental reasons why it was good, like the handling and slower vehicle speed - I was pretty sure we'd never hear from it again. It didn't find much traction at retail either (your fault).
