TGS: The game also known as Trusty Bell.
Last generation was easy. If you wanted to play Japanese RPGs, you bought a PlayStation 2 - preferably investing in a dirt-cheap GameCube later on in the cycle when the likes of Tales of Symphonia tempted you to the platform. Microsoft's failure to crack Japan meant that this entire genre of gaming remained largely untouched on the Xbox, and the opinion-polarising properties of JRPG styling and gameplay meant that the majority of Xbox owners were perfectly happy with that situation.

Review | Samurai Warriors 2
Love is a battlefield.
The generic marketing survey that falls out of the Samurai Warriors 2 manual asks 'what motivated you to purchase this game?' It goes on to offer a selection of choices, but the one that stands out is: 'Liked the original'. Yep, the marketing survey simply assumes that you've bought a sequel. Which is sort of appropriate. You only have to type 'warriors' up in the top left corner to see a) how many of these battlefield epics Koei has already brought out, and b) how each successive instalment seems to sap a little bit of each reviewer's generosity.

TGS: Sorry, Riiiiiiidge Raaaaacerrrrrr Seveeeeeeen.
At one point during Ken Kutaragi's Tokyo Game Show keynote, he took time to emphasise how important innovation was, and how the industry can't rely on throwing out sequels if we expect it to grow during the next generation. Good point well made, but one made having just shown a video showreel featuring Devil May Cry 4, Virtua Fighter 5, Final Fantasy XIII and Ridge Racer 7.

TGS: Not a dry eye in the house.
Whatever else you may feel about the Devil May Cry titles, there's no denying the astonishing level of polish and style with which Capcom has executed each instalment in the series. With both environments and lead character dripping with near-fetishistic Gothic style - the former laden with brooding architecture and stained glass, the latter clad in rich leather and bondage-like straps - the series has sailed through all arguments about style over substance by simply providing so much style that you're not even sure you care by the time you get to the second clause.

TGS: Hands-on, and chat with Masahiro Kumono.
Sonic, in case you missed it, celebrated his 15th birthday earlier this year. Which is more than can be said for some of the costume-clad girls tottering around the TGS showfloor by the looks of it. But SEGA's defiantly evergreen mascot is currently undergoing yet another rejuvenating makeover as the core 3D action-platform element of the franchise evolves onto next-gen.

TGS: Divining if it's any good.
When the Xbox 360 launched last Christmas, it was widely remarked upon that many of the console's early portfolio of titles were developed in the UK - with games from Bizarre Creations and Rare forming the backbone of the launch line-up for the system. With the PlayStation 3, once again, British developers are punching above their weight - and of the key first-party titles given top billing on Sony's stand at TGS, no less than three hail from the sceptered isle. Two are racing games - the genuinely head-turning MotorStorm and the nice-if-you-like-that-sort-of-thing F1 - while the third is developer Ninja Theory's graphically stunning slash-'em-up, Heavenly Sword.

Review | Rhythm Tengoku - Rhythm Heaven
Ready to ware.
Navigating a game in Japanese is never exactly an easy task for the uninitiated, but upon first glance Rhythm Tengoku might appear more daunting than most. You switch it on, perhaps whilst bored on a plane to France or, more likely, because someone's stolen the newspaper from the bog, and there's a nice friendly blue title screen and some lovely silly music. Then a robot samurai appears and spouts all sorts of nonsense, of which, thanks to my extensive training in Japanese (consisting entirely of Taiko Drum Master and DDR), the only words I could understand were DANCE, DRUM and something that looked disconcertingly like INADEQUATE. Following this brief monologue, the robot samurai subjects you to a sort of rhythm test - pressing A in time to a beat with varying degrees of complexity - which highlights your musical inadequacy with Kawashima-esque chilling bluntness. But not to worry. By the time you've worked your way through all 50-ish of Rhythm Tengoku's ingenious and gently insane mini-games, matters will be much improved.
