    Caesar IV

    Pre-E3: The emperor strikes back.

There's a lot of talk about how there are too many sequels knocking about these days, and how too many of them are too similar to their predecessors. But there's also an argument in favour of sequels which deliberately don't muck about too much with the original formula - if it worked well the first time, why not simply try to improve on it, rather than change it? After all, when you make a nice cup of tea, are you disappointed if it turns out to be very similar to the last one you drank? Are you tempted to, say, replace the milk with soy sauce, just to make it a bit "darker"? Why not just serve it in a nicer cup, perhaps with a saucer and everything?

    Guitar Hero II

E3: Onboard the Harmonix tour bus.

E3 is distinctly NOT rock and roll. Some of you might have visions of us running around a room packed with game developers, swigging Martinis and shooting the breeze about our Geometry Wars score, pausing to pose with totty and then sprinkling a few hundred inebriated words into a document. Which - well, to be fair, I am drunk - but the point is that the reality is different. Really we all just stand around moaning, play some games while being jostled by thousands of people, who inexplicably paid $200 to wander around the same room as us collecting brochures and then pass out with six bags on each trunklike arm, before slugging our way crosstown to hammer two thousand words into a vaguely coherent, you know, thing. Me-do.

    Too Human

    E3: Too easy, more like.

Microsoft is surely counting its blessings with two former Nintendo-centric developers showing at this years E3. Obviously, Silicon Knights' previous epic Eternal Darkness helped fill a void within the first year of the GameCube lineup, and SK is back again to provide a similar favour for Microsoft. Comparisons between these two games seem natural. Particle effects, colour schemes, and sweeping cinematic in-game camera are emphasised in both games, which creates an auteur atmosphere for players of Too Human and Eternal Darkness.

    Feature | E3 2006: Konami

Metal Gear Solid 4, Castlevania, Coded Arms, and moreā€¦

I have watched Hideo Kojima take a wee. Now, I expect there are two possibilities going through your head, here, one; that I'm making some kind of juvenile joke about Hideo Kojima picking up a Wii controller, which he didn't do, so that one's out, or two; that Hideo Kojima has some kind of a weird urine fetish and let his basest desires take hold during the Konami Pre-show press conference. No, no that one either. The actual fact is that I just happened to be waiting behind him in the line for the sole urinal in the toilet of the LA public library that held this year's event. I wasn't really paying attention, I swear, I was just a bit shocked when he turned around and was... Hideo Kojima.

    Motor Storm

    E3: Evolutionary.

After that tech demo video at Sony's now legendary E3 press conference of 2005, it was hardly surprising that people harboured serious reservations over whether Motor Storm (and more specifically the PS3) could live up to Sony's lofty claims. Lest we forget, the pre-rendered video footage ("shot to spec") showed a literally unbelievable degree of detail that had attendees shaking their heads over whether a ) it was gameplay footage, and b) could the PS3 really be this powerful a system.

    Super Mario Galaxy

    E3: Wii approve.

In the two days I've spent inside the Wii section of E3, nothing has been more stressful than having my badge ripped off me directly in the middle of it. Because, well, they won't issue you a replacement one. No matter what you do. As despite being a slightly well known games journalist (hey, I've been slagged off on people's blogs!) who is actually working at the show (not just having a nice time waiting in line) apparently I might have went outside and sold my pass for 'one and a half thousand dollars'. That is, naturally, insane. Literally anyone can buy a pass for three hundred as a general attendee. What, it's worth $1500 to get the most inedible sandwiches ever at 11:30a.m sharp and use a stupidly crowded media room, which seems to have bigger lines than the Wii booth?

E3: Atsushi Inaba on Okami, and his latest and project.

One of the things you pick up on after a few E3s is the patterns of behaviour. The slowing of your feet on the second day; the growing numbers out on the concourse at any given time smoking and yalrighting to casual acquaintances; the secret handshake to walk to the front of the Nintendo queue; the tradition of lumping online journalists from different European territories into the same interviews.
