E3: Gotham for guns?
When Bizarre Creations said it wanted to do for the shooter genre what Project Gotham had done for the racing genre, I wanted to do for their soundbite department what blisters are currently doing to my feet. The lack of detail in its original announcement didn't really help much, prompting some to imagine a sort of Fight Club shooter, sounding worryingly close to the awful second half of Manhunt.

E3: Handheld horror.
Bringing one of the darkest, most sinister game franchises ever to the jolly, shiny world of handheld PSP gaming might not seem the most immediately obvious idea, but since when was anything connected with Silent Hill supposed to make any sense?

E3: Serving up another ace.
The demise of the Dreamcast some five years ago seemed to throw a spanner in the works of some of Sega's most treasured new franchises of that era. Case in point Virtua Tennis, which enjoyed chart-topping success back in the summer of 2000 and a quick-fire (but fantastic) sequel a little over a year later in the dying days of the company's first party releases for its much admired console.. Fans clung onto the belief that the Japanese company would one day re-ignite the brand, but all we got were a couple of handheld fillers to tide us over.

E3: Global war in the meching.
When they say that show floors are a rubbish place to cast judgements around, they're thinking about games like Chromehounds. If ever something's destined to have its point missed by sweltering SEGA-heads, it's FromSoftware's ambitious multiplayer mech game. Because while on the surface it's Armored Core crossed with MechAssault, a few minutes with a demo isn't going to tell the whole story - of a game with similar aspirations to the ludicrous multiplayer war of Steel Battalion: Line of Contact, trying to be unashamedly hardcore without alienating everyone.

Interview | Miyamoto and Sakurai on Nintendo Wii
E3: Smash Bros., Mario, more.
Nintendo spent Wednesday afternoon fouling up our meticulously planned Wednesday evenings here in Los Angeles by keeping us tied up in an hour-long press conference to unveil Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as you may already have read about. Still, it was their own party in West Hollywood they were forcing us to miss, so perhaps there's no harm done.

E3: Junglist massive.
So. To start off with, we could tell you the one about how Crysis is being developed by Crytek, and how it also developed Far Cry, and about the Ubisoft / EA switch, but you probably know all that already. Or we could start with the storyline, which is basically about fighting aliens in jungles and isn't likely to excite anyone who's played more than two videogames very much. So instead, let's start with what you really need to know about Crysis: it looks superb.

E3: Sadly not a Diana Ross-based RTS.
Chris Taylor is a man with ambitions on a grand scale. It all started a decade ago, when he helped to create Total Annihilation - one of the most popular real-time strategy games of all time. Taylor failed to secure the rights to produce a sequel, but went on to set up his own studio, Gas Powered Games, which enjoyed a healthy amount of success with Dungeon Siege.

E3: Here be dragons. And movie tie-ins.
These days, Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without an epic blockbuster based on some rubbish old books about wizards turning up in cinemas. It was much better when we were growing up; children's films had proper themes, like space and time travel and robots and mermaids. Okay, so The Never Ending Story had magic and dragons and all that, but a horse drowns in it. DROWNS [you've ruined it for me - Ed].

E3: The world's first anti-war RTS?
It's not unusual to hear a developer claim that their latest game puts a new twist on an old genre. But Vincent van Diemen, producer of Joint Task Force, reckons that his latest effort not only takes RTS gameplay in a new direction, but throws a brand new element into the mix; JTF, it seems, is a game with a political message.

E3: Who said the cold war was over?
The first Destroy All Humans was nearly a great game. Nearly, but not quite, because despite some novel ideas and a superb sense of humour, there were too many niggly problems - namely simplistic level layouts, unimaginative weapon designs and the DNA harvesting thing, which just seemed to slow the whole game down.

E3: The real cold war is about to begin.
In the year 2142, the world is a very different place. A much colder one, for starters, since a new ice age is dawning. As the Earth's soil begins to freeze over, rendering vast portions of the land uninhabitable, the planet's population finds itself fighting for survival, battling for territory, and embroiled in a bitter struggle over who gets to wear the last remaining woolly jumpers.

E3: The PSP gets a new super sharp shooter.
Hollywood just can't seem to stop itself turning rubbish old TV shows into big budget movies. From Charlie's Angels and Starsky and Hutch to the Dukes of Hazzard and the forthcoming Baywatch movie, aargh, there's just no getting away from them. And why are they all American TV shows, anyway? Keira Knightley would make a lovely Juliet Bravo, and who can't see Gerard Depardieu breathing new life into the role of that bloke out of 'Allo 'Allo? (Banderas to star as incompetent Italian fascist type, obv).
