Earned in Blood skirmishes.
Time to get the bayonets out again, Brothers in Arms - you can download a trio of new skirmish maps for Earned in Blood on PC and Xbox. Arms' manufacturer Ubisoft released them yesterday evening as part of a 1.03 patch for the PC version (no word on what else it does) and as a downloadable Xbox Live update for those of you with that version.

With macaroni and yoghurt pots.
Those of you eager to strap some personality to your Xbox 360 - but unimpressed by Microsoft's "Hot Rod", "Sun" or even "Woody" faceplates - need no longer idle on eBay hoping to grab one of last year's E3 or X05 offerings, nor camp out behind the sofa and wait for people you like to walk across before shooting them in the back of the head with a nailgun. Thanks to US peripheral people Nyko, now you can make your own faceplates. Providing you're American. Tsk.

Review | Far Cry Instincts Predator
Evolutionary.
Turning Far Cry into a tightly scripted, linear console game made a lot of sense. The Xbox was never going to be able to cope with the free-roaming environments that made the PC original such a hugely admired game, but most people agreed that Ubisoft's Montreal studio excelled themselves in providing what was easily one of the best shooters to have ever graced the platform.

Interview | Titan Quest
Let's get mythical.
Titan Quest, the new action RPG from startup developer Iron Lore, can be described as epic in more ways than one. For starters, it's nearly six years since studio co-founder Brian Sullivan began work on the game - which is a long development process by anyone's standards (apart from the people doing Duke Nukem Forever, obviously).

Landing at E3.
Hudson's already intimately involved with the Nintendo Revolution - having agreed to a deal that will see TurboGrafx titles made available through the console's Virtual Console digital distribution system - but according to an E3 teaser email sent out the other day it's also working on some new stuff.

Review | Tales of Phantasia
16-bit too late.
That Tales of Phantasia should peek its head around the curtain of GBA gaming so late in the system's life with scarcely a ripple of applause seems immensely unfair. Had this game been released three or fours years ago, the ovation would have lasted for weeks, the far-reaching repercussions from its release sending shivers down so many Super Nintendo developers' now crooked backs.

Proper Orrery-show.
Those of you playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using a PC can download the extra content we talked about yesterday - and to add to the indignity of coming second to the Xbox 360 people in getting-it-quickly terms, you're paying $1.89 rather than 150 Microsoft points. Which is god only knows what in old money.

Guitars, drum-heads, vid-cards.
They say that success doesn't make very good news. Obviously we agreed with them - until our boss told us he'd won a ton on the Grand National, at which point we discovered that actually success is very good news, m'lud, and that it's a reflection both of a canny mind and sexually attractive face.

Review | Auto Assault
We're addicted to brake fluid. Don't worry, we can stop any time.
Some things are better balanced; strawberries and cream or Eric and Ernie, for example. We think it's an issue of complexity, that certain things on their own are just too simple; that people want a certain level of complication to take up those spare brain cycles, and are willing to try anything that sucks them in just enough. Certain gamers, get this, don't like car games. Others, perverse imps that they are, just don't like simple shooters. But combine the two, chuck in a few thousand other people, and they'll play it. Hence the shooty-car MMO genre (sorry for the excessively analytic lingo) and hence Auto Assault.

Remember Dave Mirra? He was the Tony Hawk of BMX games - or at least that was Acclaim's plan - and seemed destined to vanish into obscurity after the publisher fell off its own financial bike back in 2004.

Review | Drill Dozer
Dozer good job.
A good platform game's a bit like a clever detective. Probably one with a decent catchphrase and a bumbling sidekick he has to explain everything to. He's got his facts, and he's got you in the interrogation room. But you're a master crim! Artfully deflecting his aggression and smugly evading his traps of logic. Eventually one of you will win, but in the meantime there's room for lots of brinkmanship, you've got his magnificent trademark coat to admire - and what with Sherlock Holmes, Diagnosis Murder and that Gene Wilder one I saw at Christmas eating up all the good outfits and particularly hats, chances are it'll be a smoking jacket or a ballerina outfit.

Review | Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
Soldier-up when it's time to go to war...
Modern Combat nails the tension and thrill of war like a sniper nails a headshot. It's smooth and it happens so quickly it can leave you shocked - if you're not paying close attention you'll end up with your limbs spread across the war zone. If the on-screen action makes your palms clammy and your heart beat a little faster, the game must be doing the right thing. Whether man-to-man with automatics blazing, frantically darting for an inch of cover and hoping a combination of skills and blind luck will save your arse, or tank-to-tank, the pause between shell loading causing your buttocks to tighten as you take aim a shot you hope will rip your enemies apart. Modern Combat is a tense and dangerous war game from the very start.

Review | Final Fantasy XII
'Final' for this generation, at least.
The light creeping in through the small barred window above me reminds me of what I miss so much. The outside world. Life as an aspiring pirate isn't as easy as people make out and for the third time this week, I've ended up on the wrong side of the law. But this time it's serious. Serving time itself is one thing but the hardened inmates here are out for blood. My blood. With my equipment gone, I only have my fists to rely on when the inevitable occurs and one of these reprobates makes an attempt on my life. Sure enough, with a deafening crash, three hulking Seeq warriors fall out of nowhere and my very life hangs in the balance...

Five or six times, with Singstar-esque genre versions.
Those of you tired of us banging on so much about Guitar Hero a month before you can even buy it in the UK (April 7th remember!) will be pleased to hear that we ought to be banging on about it for at least another couple of years, as Kelly Sumner, CEO of publisher RedOctane, has told MCV we'll see a further "five or six" titles by the middle of 2007.
