In-depth hands-on with EA's blockbuster.
Four and a half years on from the atomic explosion of Grand Theft Auto III, the fallout's still raining down on the games business. The blast-proof Electronic Arts initially hid in its bunker, thumbing its nose at the genre, with execs routinely vocal about how it was a 'family' publisher that didn't really go around making such gratuitously violent titles. Fair enough. It's not as if it didn’t dominate enough categories to last a lifetime to have to worry about getting its hands dirty.

Review | Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
It's always the quiet ones…
Resident Evil 4 is an absolutely stonking game. In fact, it's so good that I found myself rummaging through old magazines such as Zzap64! just to find words like 'stonking' to describe just how joyful it is. What makes this even more amazing is that Resident Evil 4 is a very subtle refinement of the Resident Evil series. The same slow, awkward movement, relentless waves of single-minded foes, and puzzles, evolved to include a new claustrophobic third-person camera and a glorious aiming system.

Review | Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure
Spray it with flowers.
It used to be so simple. If you wanted to court controversy in a game, all you had to do was throw in a little anti-social violence or smutty sex and let the tabloids do their kneejerk thing. It worked a treat for Carmageddon, GTA and Manhunt. And who could forget the NES classic, Turbo Hitler Topless Nun Smash? Aah, those were the days.

Review | Aeon Flux
Well and truly fluxed…
We’ve been so invigorated in a refreshing shower of high quality titles from the past three months that we’d forgotten games like this still exist. When not soaping-up with the next-gen, we’ve had the pleasure of pampering ourselves with a gift basket of minty fresh titles that have breathed new life into our crusty home consoles. We’ve deodorised with the perfumed prettiness of Shadow of Colossus and plucked the cheddar from our toenails with the ever-sharp TOCA 3. And while the piping hot water of Black sprays onto our face we reach out with squinting eyes and grab the Aeon Flux loofer. It’s damp and someone’s left their pubic hair on it.

Review | Suikoden Tactics
Someone else's turn.
Of course, it was Nippon Ichi that spoiled everything. Before Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics. Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom and the electric promise of all their sequels, the Strategy RPG was a straightforward affair. You had old-fashioned basics like a start, a middle and an end, quaint little boundaries to hold everything together like a chronological script and a game plan, charming little inclusions like some named characters to take care of and enemies for them to take care of. But then Nippon Upstart stole the rulebook, gulped down the pages and let them rearrange themselves through a winding, convoluted digestive tract before using the resultant faecal statement as nurturing manure on their brave new world. [How very colourful. Have an extra 50p. - Ed]

Review | Rugby 06
Leader of the pack.
Somewhere high up in EA’s crystal towers, somebody is sleeping well tonight, safe in the knowledge that gaming’s equivalent of Skynet is one step closer to global domination. Because to even the most casual of fan it’s clear that there’s no better console version of Rugby Union than EA’s spanking new shiny version. Case closed. Job done. Captain licensing money has saved the day again.

Interview | SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate
Dean Tate on Irrational's latest.
SWAT 4 was one of the best tactical action games of 2005; so good, in fact, that it made it to the heady heights of No.28 in EG's end-of-year Top 50 extravaganza. It was certainly one of the most brutally macho games you'll ever come across anyway, making you feel like you're playing out a particularly stroppy episode of The Shield.
