Review | Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
"I'll be back." ... "At £9.99."
They just wouldn't let it lie. The money men couldn't just leave a fantastic series alone and let its legend rest in peace. They had to go the whole hog and exhume the Terminator cash cow, defecate on its flaming corpse and wheel out an ageing Arnie for a familiar round of destruction, CG effects and one-liners in return for millions of dollars. But, ach, as much as I want to hate the cynical, gutless pointless self-parodied attempts at reviving the franchise, the third movie didhave its moments, and kept at least some of its less demanding fans happy enough for merely not being the complete pile of arse that everyone expected it to be.

Fix those war wounds.
If there's one game this year that has given Yours Truly an utterly hellish ordeal in order to review it, then Commandos 3: Destination Berlin would be it. Reviewing it was an ordeal I wouldn't wish upon anyone, except… well, I did, because I said it was good. And it is! And to thank those of you who listened and then went out and put yourselves through the mill in order to get past the first couple of missions, Eidos has released a patch.

SCEE moderates PS2 Online servers
Good on them.
Fed up of online cheats and people who refuse to play tactical action games properly? Want to see some action? We certainly do. Having spent the past week yelling at pissant hicks to run with the knife and buy their bloody equipment faster in Xbox Counter-Strike, the prospect of a bit of orderly terrorism or counter-terrorism is certainly enough to brighten our weary eyes.

Sidestory sideshow tumbles past Christmas.
According to reports, the US release of Tecmo's balletic third-person action title Ninja Gaiden for Xbox has been delayed until February 2004. GameSpot yesterday cited sources close to the developer and pointed to various online retailers to confirm (something we certainly can't argue with over here - Amazon lists it as mid-May 2004...).

Name changed too. Oh and they've hired some voice actors.
We thought perhaps if we ignored this it might go away. Unfortunately it hasn't, and we're left with no choice but to confirm that Atari has renamed the third Driver game. From now on, we're all supposed to type DRIV3R.

Review | Links 2004
Like Tiger Woods, with online options. Got to be great. Right?
When you think of Links games, you tend to think of lush but static backgrounds, immensely detailed physics and a control system that rewards precision above all else. Golfer's golf games, if you like. Tiger Woods, on the other hand, is best known these days for its analogue swing, preposterously unrealistic courses, forgiving controls and physics and its devotion to fun rather than authenticity. Unsurprisingly, ever since EA went down this route instead of trying to mimic Links, the series has struck something of a chord with the rest of the world - the folks to whom three clicks does not represent the swing of a golf club and bonuses for striking the pin or chipping in direct from a bunker are significant draws.

Console implicated in Maryland shooting.
I'm not exactly known for bottling up my outrage when it comes to frustrating games. I've thrown pads, screamed at the walls and even threatened to punch people in the face for goading me as I sit, thunderstruck by an appalling mechanic, a needlessly harsh bit of design or the looming spectre of forced failure.

Review | Gregory Horror Show
Survival horror gets surreal.
It's equally a pleasure and a chore to review a game that dares to stray from the accepted norms. Capcom instinctively knows Gregory Horror Show is destined to be filed under 'quirky' by unsympathetic retailers already, and has been canny enough to release it at a knock down twenty quid to give it a better chance of a) making it into stores in the first place and b) selling to a confused but intrigued public after something a bit different. But is that enough to coax your moth eaten wallet out into the open air?

Review | Top Gear Rally
More like second gear...
Two and a half years into the GBA's life cycle and tens of million of units later (well over two million sold in the UK alone) Nintendo is still one of the only trustworthy sources of titles on the format. This year alone, the likes of Wario Ware, Advance Wars 2 and Zelda easily rank alongside our very favourite gaming experiences of the year on any format.

Feature | Points of Review!
The slightly dotty Mrs. Biscuit introduces this week's reader contributions.
Good afternoon my little dears! What with today being the anniversary of young Thomas's birth, I've been called in from the tearoom to wade through his bundle of reader ruminations, while he tends to his birthday correspondence and sups on a slice of carrot cake. His grandparents sent him such a lovely card, too. I hope he likes his sweater. I think he looks so handsome in plaid. Now then, where did I put my spectacles?

Acclaim's latest marketing campaign looks set to entertain.
When it comes to upsetting Daily Mail readers and other cantankerous moralists with no sense of humour, nobody does it better than Acclaim. Truly they are the masters of excessive marketing, and we're glad to see they haven't lost their touch...

Review | Project Gotham Racing 2
Tom and Kristan fight over Bizarre Creations' latest car porn.
Although I've dabbled in Xbox Live games on numerous occasions over the past year, it wasn't until yesterday afternoon that Microsoft's online gaming service truly landed in my living room. Oddly enough, it happened during a single-player game of Project Gotham Racing 2. As I sat there happily throwing a curvy posterchild for "American muscle" into bend after bend in search of an elusive first-place finish, a little envelope-shaped icon appeared in the bottom of the screen. Eyeing it suspiciously, I finished my race, hit the A button a few times to check my score and compare it against worldwide leaderboards for that particular track, and then hit Y to pull up the game's Xbox Live menu. Sitting there at the bottom of my friends list was a request from Kristan to join him in a race - and all I had to do to switch from the cosy perfectionist pursuits of the single-player game to the heat of a six-player race over broadband was hit the A button.
